Hi all, I'm the parent of an 11th grader aiming for Marine Engineering at Texas A&M - Galveston. He took the SAT a year ago and got a 1940. He was planning on taking it once more this coming Fall, and then I found these boards, lol. Growing up, I have only heard of the ACT in passing, and only when I was older. I have never known one person who took it -- in high school it was the SAT, period. But now I just read that the ACT is more math/science heavy, and I'm thinking my son might score pretty well on it. Those are definitely his strong points.

So should he take the SAT one more time, or give the ACT a shot? Thanks for any suggestions! :)

I’d say give the ACT a try. My ACT score is significantly better than my SAT Practice Test scores (35 vs mid-high 2000’s), and for me, reading is the most difficult section on the SAT.

The ACT is far more straightforward across all four sections, and vocabulary is not directly tested on the ACT. The English section is perhaps a bit more difficult, but if your son is good at math and sciences, the ACT is probably a good choice because the two topics make up exactly half of the test. Give it some thought, but especially for someone stronger in the math and science areas, I’d say give the ACT a try.

Thanks so much for your reply! That really helps. I’ll let my son know!

Get your son to take an ACT practice test to see how he does :)
