Do you know how pointless this thread is? First of all, almost everyone didn't take SAT when they are in 8th grade (not even practice tests) and second of all most of the scores are fake. I mean comeon, I am not pointing fingers but alot of your scores are so phony -_-

You're mistaken if you think very many of those scores are phony. I've seen statistical summaries of talent search scores in various regions for various years, and the scores reported in this thread (both the "before" scores and the "after" scores) look very plausible to me. You can't prove the scores are fake unless you have seen the score reports of the test-takers mentioned here, as I have in one case that I know to be genuine.

lol. 1570 as an 8th grader? that's just crazy man. but u didn't improve, tsk tsk

1130 (7th SAT) 1310 (10th PSAT) 1400 (11thPSAT) ?11th SAT : )

lol, thanks for the encouragement, ramsfan. That's actually my PSAT math+verbal (which I didn't really put any thought into), but I thought that my complete lack of progress was amusing enough that I should mention it. I'm definitely going for 2400 on the new SAT, though.

Tokenadult, I've never seen talent search score summaries like that before. Wow... that surprises me. The highest score was 1540? I may have missed out on quite the gravy train when I didn't take the SAT through any talent identification program. Basically, I took it for kicks - plus, since I was a young 8th grader (still 12 at the time), I thought it would be cool to get a 1600. lol... if I wanted that to happen, I should have studied.

I have to say that the SAT is a pretty pointless test, however. A high score simply indicates a mastery of the basic skills tested, not any particular brilliance, while a lower score can mean a bad day, or a lack of test-taking ability. The fact that I received a 1570 when I was 12, although apparently unusual (more unusual than I thought, it seems), doesn't mean that I possessed any particular brilliance, or that I am particularly intelligent now (in fact, I can assure you that I'm not!).

Vehement, I don't see why you doubt any of the scores here. What evidence have you seen that people are lying? The score distribution seems pretty reasonable to me.

Considering there are only a handful of perfect scores in the entire US it is surprising that 2 posted their scores here. I mean as far as I know, last few years the number is less than 300.

I think that last year it was up around 900, not 300.

Have you looked at many posts on this forum? There are literally hundreds of perfect scores posted here; why should this thread in particular seem so difficult to believe? Considering that, to the best of my knowledge, this is the premier college discussion board on the internet, it's entirely reasonable that many of the most dedicated, accomplished students would be here - including quite a few 1600s.

Nice screen name, by the way. Here is a College Board chart showing how many aggregate scores at each level (this, apparently, reports single-sitting scores) there were in a recent year.

http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/about/news_info/cbsenior/yr2003/pdf/2003CBSVM.pdf

I find it quite plausible that some of the people who end up getting 1600s are people who first took the SAT in a middle-school-age talent search. The people who have posted to this thread so far vary in age, but certainly represent less than 1 percent of the people who could report scores of 1600 in some year or another.

randomperson-As someone who did score well with the talent searches, let me tell you that the "gravy train" was slim to nonexistent.

lol, okay, that's reassuring. I guess it's nice to hear that I didn't really miss out on anything.

So, so far the average middle school score is 1080 and the average high school one is 1480

My kid's 7th grade SAT was 1100. This year's 10th grade PSAT was 1130 (for math and reading - at least the writing was o.k. at 640). We assumed, like most of you and the three published reports in academic journals showing average improvements from 7th to 11th, that she'd increase to the 1450-1550 range. Alas! We're wondering if it's the new SAT. Did you guys take the new one, or the old one? I hear the new one is less of an IQ test (no anlogies) and more about remembering what you were taught.

Re: post #55, does your daughter have time to do independent reading of her choosing, and time to THINK about fun aspects of math, or is she busy with schoolwork every minute? I think the most important thing for intellectual growth in the middle-school to senior-high years is what a child does in free time activities. School programs sometimes are immensely time-wasting and poor returns on investment of time for the brighter students, unless one is at a truly exceptional school.

I would also suggest that the PSAT is not a perfect predictor of SAT I scores. It wasn't for me (my NMS semifinalist PSAT score still UNDERpredicted my SAT score the next year). The way to get a reality check is, of course, to take an SAT test, and see what the score is.

Good luck in the college application process.

1300//1400 - on the dot - although it would have turned out as 1460 if I'd just used the PSAT Math + Reading :) .

Bah... lol :p. I have like no improvement. Tips?

My scores are valid, thank you. I did the talent search in 7th and 8th grades... that chart that the above poster linked to is cool. I didn't realize so few people (thousands.. but I mean percentage-wise) got above my score of a 1470 lol... these boards really skew one's perspective of reality.

I've only taken the SAT in an official capacity 3 times in my life:

1100 (7th)-didn't study
1290 (8th)-didn't study
1550 (11th)-took a couple of practice tests; that was the extent of my studying
