SAT grammar question

<p>There's a problem on OG saying that "children have developed an independence that..."
Is independence countable? Why should several children develop only "an" independence?</p>

<p>certain words or nouns that are otherwise considered uncountable can be used with the article a or an, especially when used in a collective sense </p>

<p>they developed a love for ice cream
the boys have an intense hatred for their teacher</p>
