SAT: how important REALLY?

I was curious on your personal thoughts.

What are your opinions of the importance of SAT scores in the college admissions process? Based upon personal experience (i.e. you think you got rejected from somewhere you otherwise would've had a good chance at if it weren't for low(er) SAT scores; or on the other hand your high SAT versus your low GPA helped you get in!) or other sources...

If you look at the Common Data Sets, they say how much weight is put on SATs. Most colleges list them as "very important" along with grades.

This is just my opinion, but I think SATs aren't that important once you get past a certain number. For example, I think with the new SAT most competitive colleges just want to make sure their applicants have above a 2100 (for a normal, middle class suburban student) to ensure their rankings and prove the "quality" of their school. Of course the "benchmark" varies with different states, different ethnicities, and financial backgrounds, but if an admissions officer is looking at two applicants with comparable SAT scores (say 2240 and 2300), those numbers just don't really matter anymore.

I wouldn't worry about SAT I's too much. I got into Caltech with a 2190 and no extracurric's. I just got good teacher recs and 800s on all my SAT II's. That and my passion for chemistry.

Keep in mind, though, that mine was the first year colleges got SAT I scores. They might change how they look at them for next year.
