SAT II: U.S. History Discussion May 2009

are u guys sure? so you guys dont remember a question with a quote about the phillipines? hmm am i getting my practice tests mixed up? but i swear there was a question about that

the choices were like which area and they were like japan, phillipines, hawaii, cuba, and somewhere else?

btw what would you guys say a raw score of 74/90 is? like a 760-780?

schoolisborning: I think I remember it. I forgot what my answer was.

wow thank you RedCatharsis !!!

but… what was the question about sinclair - the jungle??? i dont remember the question
!!oh!! and this one too… ! 64. Mercantilism - more exports than imports

The mercantilism question was simply “What is a favorable balance of trade?” Very, very short question.

The next was “Which of the following was a major piece of muckraker literature/work.” The Jungle, clearly.

Lol, read the other posts. You’re confusing questions together!

I think that might have been one of the options to the James Riis question, which I got wrong. :P

actually, I do not think I am because for the one about Washington, I didnt even read the other quotes…but i may be confusing questions from other tests =)

for the question about cuba, the phillippines, hawaii, etc. wasn’t that about a protectorate that the US established (maybe I’m getting mixed up too lol)? If so, that would be Cuba but I honestly don’t remember the question…

another question to add to the list: the mcclures magazine picture was from the 1920s

“What is a favorable balance of trade?” Anyone remember the choices? I don’t recall answer this at all.

no, i know i got the jacob riis question right. i remember putting alice paul for one though but i guess that was from a practice test

Laissez-Faire??

ya laissez-faire means that nonintervention by governemnt.

i dont recall balance of trade either

Bombed it. =*(
I dont know what happened. A lot of the questions were very specific, but some i felt were trick questions… X___X

nor do I recall the balance of trade question. did that have to do with the graph of imports and exports?

actually i dont think cuba was a choice…it was a question about a quote and it said this quote pertains to what? if cuba was a choice, i woulda 100% put that.

maybe you’re thinking about the roosevelt corollary one? said US could interfere in Latin America. I think that had a quote.

what was the answer with the graph of exports vs. imports?

it asked which was not true

it just was that imports are worth more than exports right? that was the one NOT true?

hmm weird i remember putting roosevelt corrolary not as an answer but as a choice in that it allowed them to “police” the other countries around…oh well im getting totally confused so ill stop.

I think the other answer was Britain?..

thats what i said, although many are saying what WASN’T true was that the values were the same before both wars. but when i looked, they did indeed look the same.

Hey RedCatharsis, your list is pretty good but it still has errors.

Regarding the Spain vs. Portugal (#33), Portugal is the answer. Henry the Navigator started the Age of Discovery. Vasco de Gama, among others, continued it.

Regarding JFK, McCarthy, and Nixon (#21), the question asked explicitly how they got STARTED in politics. Therefore, the answer has to be that they were war heros. JFK was a war hero after his bravery as the leader of PT-105. McCarthy won his senate seat with the nickname “Tail-gunner Joe.” Nixon also was awarded medals and accolades for his service, two stars and multiple commendations. McCarthy became involved in witch hunts etc. after he got elected. Nixon got involved with the HUAC after he got elected. Kennedy didn’t participate in HUAC and wasn’t known for being anti-communist.

Regarding WWI, the war definitely started because of the Germans returning to unrestricted submarine warfare, breaking their promise. The Zimmerman Telegram was not as important as the submarines since Mexico was too politically unstable. Furthermore, Wilson incorporated freedom of the seas in his fourteen points.

{"When a German U-boat sank the British liner Lusitania in 1915, with 128 Americans aboard, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson vowed, “America is too proud to fight” and demanded an end to attacks on passenger ships. Germany complied. Wilson unsuccessfully tried to mediate a settlement. He repeatedly warned the U.S. would not tolerate unrestricted submarine warfare, in violation of international law and U.S. ideas of human rights. Wilson was under pressure from former president Theodore Roosevelt, who denounced German acts as “piracy”. After submarines sank seven U.S. merchant ships and the publication of the Zimmerman telegram, Wilson called for war on Germany, which the U.S. Congress declared on 6 April 1917.} - Wikipedia (it is good enough)

Regarding the Imperialism question (#56), the answer was clearly that the United States was overpopulated (or something to that effect). Counteracting European forces does put the United States first. That is why the United States got the Open Door Policy in China, to ensure that other European powers did not establish permanent spheres of influence and thus limit potential markets for the US. The United States was clearly not overpopulated, in fact there were still many territories that had yet to become states, since they lacked the necessary numbers.

Other than that, the list looks great.

Not at all. Like previously stated, it was a short question, and the answer was simple “exporting more than importing.” Or something like.

What was the desired ratio of trade Britain had for its colonies…?

I still have no clue what this is about. Hehe.

But towards what you said earlier, a -16, or 74/90 shouldn’t merit a 760-780 as you implied, UNLESS the curve is of 82/90 is raw for 800. (I’m not sure. For all we know they mean like 84/90 or 83/90 raw score, which rounds down after subtracting wrongs?)

Now if it’s a 82/90 raw, meaning 80/90 after deductions, then yes, another 6 points will probably warrant you anywhere between 760-780 depending on the rest of the testers.

However, if it is only 82/90 after deductions, then your -16 would most likely warrant anything from 700-750, since you need to factor in the -20 after deductions. Now, I do realize that people are saying you can get -20 or -21 and then get a -26ish after deductions, but that depends almost entirely on a huge curve. Entirely.

ugh i’m looking at a -9 with 2 skipped. ■■■.
