SAT II: U.S. History Discussion May 2009

I said this earlier, hopefully, I looked up Washington’s Farewell address and it actually has the quote on it there. So it’s A.

I picked wrongly, unfortunately, because the farewell address refers to this “no entangling alliances” mandate as if it’s already been established, which might be what confused people on the test.

Correct. That is a fictionalized autobiography of hemmingway that takes place at roughly WWI, not reconstruction.

What was the theory about isolationism? No interaction at all, or interaction for political and military only, or something like that. Do not remember all of it.

jfk WAS an anticommunist in his congress career or whatnot and his family was bffs with mccarthy
so i think that’s the right answer
since mccarthy was only a captain and faked some stuff in the marines

legend, isolationism was just economic ties, but that wasn’t an answer; so none at all.

yeah percentiles suck. only reason i retook the math sat and now i probably did worse! :(

on the 2nd depression question i thought the last answer was a DECREASE in capital investment. i put inflation for that one…

hmm actually now that i think more about it it could have been the embargo since washington urged more to avoid political parties than other countries. but i remember distinctly eliminating that choice for some reason?

That was A, avoiding interactions, because the rest were just blatantly false. If you chose another answer, feel free to justify it. (I don’t remember them all, but I can definitely tell you that isolationism =/= allowing for financial and military interactions, that’s simply false).

@ The Legend: i think the answer for isolationism was the answer that included geographical distance

^OK. All of you said the same thing, which is what I put also, so thats right.

RedCatharsis, so was it GW Farewell Address or no?

And DaRican92, I remember putting that also.

^I got GW Farewell Address, straight from his quote.

“The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible”
wasn’t that the quote? because if it is then it is washington’s farewell address

Spain or Portugal?

I swear this was A, avoiding interactions DUE TO what you just said.

Mhm, somebody earlier explained why things did also inflate during the Great Depression; I’m no economics expert, so I’m not sure.

Can somebody else verify if it was increase or decrease? I swore D and E were “decrease in manufacturing” then “increased investing in capital market”

No, I just answered this earlier, it IS from George Washington’s Farewell address…period.

Lemme end this debate:

Spain. Portugal only made what, one successful voyage? Two?

Spain has at least 7 to her name.

See above. Redundant, but I enjoy responding to comments directed at me.

:]

^Spain. They Portuguese sailed for Spain.

i don’t remember the isolationism question?
was it the one where it was like which least contributed to it?
i forget what i put but i don’t think i put the geographical one.

oh good it was gw’s address! :)

i know i got really confused on the depression one. they all seemed right. im almost positive it was decrease in capital investments…if it was increase then yeah that would be right though.

im pretty sure it’s portugal…they first explored. spain first settled.

what was the one about detente?

wat was the one about the act that best exemplified the muckrakers? or was that on a practice test lol

So, for the first colonial venture, it was Florida? I was debating between Mass. Bay and Virginia, but I guess I am completely off.

DaRican92 — Upton Sinclair and The Jungle

does anyone remember of the wording of the spain portugal question
like which was the first to systematically explore yadayada…?
cause portugal was the first, but was it systematic (or whatever that adj was they used)
