SAT II vs. AP

APUS: 5
US Hist SAT II: 780

well somewhat related:
AP Calc: 5
Math Level 2 SAT II: 790

APChem: 5
SATIIChem: 800

APChinese: 5
SATIIChinese: 790

APUSH: 5
SATIIUSHistory: 770

US History: 5/800
Chemistry: 5/800

I’ll take a shot at it.

Putting all the data into pairs of AP and SAT scores (not distinguishing between subjects), the [correlation coefficient](Pearson correlation coefficient - Wikipedia) is 0.39, which makes this a medium-strength correlation (according to the guidelines on that page). Thus, you can somewhat predict the student’s AP score from his or her SAT score (and vice versa).

Taking a look at the data some more, it appears that almost everyone with a 750 or above on the subject test gets a 5 on the AP test. Out of 81 people who got a 750 or above, only four got a score below 5 on the AP, all 4s. (The AP exams were Physics B, Chem, US History, and World History; the only 800/4 combo was on Physics B.)

Here are the means for the SAT scores corresponding to each score on the AP test (rounded to the nearest possible score):

1, 2 - no data
3 (6 pairs) - 680
4 (14 pairs) - 710
5 (102 pairs) - 760

And we do the same for ranges of SAT scores (rounding to the nearest tenth):

490 and below - no data
500-690 (18 pairs): 4.4
700-750 (28 pairs): 4.6
760-790 (37 pairs): 4.9
800 (39 pairs): 5.0

As most people would expect, it appears that a higher score on one test generally predicts a higher score on the other.

Of course, most people (84% in this sample) get 5s here on CC, which is not true of AP exams in general. (In fact, the lowest SAT score in this data, 500, yielded a 5 on the corresponding AP exam.) So it’s kind of difficult to figure out whether we can actually predict much from an AP score.

Here are scores for myself and some people I know:

Biology 5/800
Biology 5/680
Physics B 5/800
Physics B 5/760
US History 5/790
US History 5/780
World History 5/800
World History 5/790
Literature 5/740 (SAT II taken junior year, AP taken senior year, so I don’t know if this should count because the test was taken before the AP class)

I know there are already too many 5’s to predict much. I really don’t know of anyone who’s taken an SAT II and not gotten a 5 on the equivalent AP exam. People at my school only take SAT II’s because they’re applying to top schools and need them, so high scores tend to be pretty uniform.

Sorry, but what is SAT II?

SAT II = SAT Subject Test

They were called the SAT IIs until 2005, but people still use the name because typing out “Subject Test” is a pain in the butt.

I made a little typo earlier:

Physics: 4/560

HUGE improvement from last year. A little note: make sure you write small on the AP test!

Physic B 5
SAT2 Physics 800

APUSH 5
SAT2 USH 780

500-690 is a pretty generous range.

680 USH, 3 AP test for me. Possible re-score.

740 Bio-M, 5 on AP
700 US History, 5 on AP (I’m really good at the writing component on the AP exam (especially DBQ), so this may explain the combo)

US History:
SAT II - 770
AP - 5

Math:
Math II - 760
Calc AB - 5

Chem:
SAT II - 800
AP - 4

Physics (B) - 800, 5

US History - 740, 5

Math II (Calc BC/AB sub) - 800, 5, 5

800 math 2c (improvement from 770 last year lol) - AP Calc BC and AB subscore 5
780 physics - AP Phys C Mech and E&M both 5 (i blame the physics B stuff which i tried to cram in two and a half weeks after all APs were done)
??0 chem - AP Chem 5 (gonna take SAT II next year)

Chinese:800, 5 (duh. Look at my location…)
Chemistry: 760, 5
