How much will AP European History prepare me for the SAT II in World History? I know I'll have to study a lot for WH, but is there some cross in terms of content and questions?

Bumppity bump.

Well I took AP World and then the SAT II, and got a 5 and 780 respectively… But if you’re in AP euro right now, isn’t there a euro SAT II? or am I mistaken? Either way, I think taking the world SAT after euro isn’t a great idea because there are so many regions which you will be missing, such as africa, asia, lat america, etc.

There isn’t a Euro SAT II, but I agree with interficio, Euro AP will not prepare you enough for the World History SAT II. So unless you plan on doing A LOT of self studying for it (pretty much the entire thing), I would not recommend it. The cross that you’re looking for will be minimal, but look through a prep book and decide for yourself.

I took a practice test and did fairly well; mainly because I started self-studying AP World at the beginning of sophomore year and dropped it; plus, all the 1450-modern day is pretty easy if you’ve taken euro since it connects the rest of the world.

Either way, I’m taking it in June, so I’m definitely getting a review book. Would Princeton Review SAT World & AP Review book suffice (since I can borrow those) or should I go out and buy Barrons?

But I get what you’re saying; world covers a much larger portion of time that euro didn’t.

Along the same lines, my son is currently taking a 9th grade world history course, It is not AP World History or even an honors class (school does not offer it). It is just your average world history class. I don’t think it is enough to prepare him for the SAT subject test in world history. Next year (10th grade), he will take AP Euro from a fantastic teacher and I expect he will do well.

So I have a similar question to the OP: should my son wait and take the subject test in world history after AP Euro? That way, he will have two years of history (mediocre preparation in world history; excellent preparation in AP Euro). Together, they might provide enough for him to do the subject test in world history?

My school offers only AP Euro and not AP World. My son took Euro last year and signed up to take the World History SAT II. The head of guidance tried to talk him out of it - told him that the Euro course was not geared for it and he wouldn’t do well, etc. Our school historical (class of 2009) score was 626 on the SAT II and they didn’t want any other low scores to bring it down. My son got a 5 on the AP test and a 750 on the SAT II. He did not study for either, other than practice tests done in class. He did no outside studying for either the AP or the SAT.

I think as he goes through AP Euro, he should also have a review book for the SAT World test so that he does not forget the info from his world history class. He should probably take it after AP Euro.

As an update: After taking AP Euro and studying somewhat for the SAT Subject Test in World History, I received a 780!

I had to speed through the Barron’s AP World History book in a week, and I skipped all the parts of Europe after the Renaissance (where AP Euro begins). I’d say it was about a 20% cross, so I personally wouldn’t recommend it to anyone unless they are diligent.
