S is taking Honors Chem this year (sophomore). Should he take SAT II in Chem this year? Or is it better to take whatever AP Science he takes? When is it recommended to take Math (in Calculus II now). D took after Jr year but wished she had done it earlier....And how many SAT IIs should one take?

Based on past experience, he should definitely take it after taking Honors Chem while all the material is still fresh in his mind. The only reason I would say not to is if he looks at some sample Chem tests and is having a lot of difficulty with them...Otherwise, I think he definitely should take it. (And if he does poorly, he could always take it again or just focus on taking more SAT IIs in strong subject areas).

As for whatever AP science he takes, he should also take the SAT II. I took the biology SAT II my freshman year and did decent, but after I took it again at the beginning of my senior year after we had covered a good amount of the material on the exam in AP Bio, I did SOOOO much better. So yea, AP science helps a lot!

As for the Math, if he is in Calculus II, then he should take it as soon as possible. (Also, if he is in Calc II as a sophomore, he should not have any problem with the Math SAT II is seems (: )... I would recommend that he takes the Math II ...I didn't take any of the math SAT II's, but according to my friends, the math I information was easier but it was more difficult to finish in time...the math II was obv. a little more difficult, but there is a much bigger curve on it, so most of them ended up doing better on math II than math I. But why not take both of them, cause you never know which hell do better on, but hes definitely ready for both of them!

As for the amount of SAT IIs....2-3 scores that you are generally happy with should be good for how many you take...Most schools that require the SAT IIs will only ask for 2-3 anyway...So, let's say he takes Chem and isn't happy with it, it doesn't hurt to take 3 more subjects that he may do better on to balance out the Chem score and so that he has 2-3 scores that he is content with. If he does really well on let's say the first 3 that he takes, there's not really a need to take more unless he wants to just for the heck of it...Just make sure that he covers the different subject areas, like Literature, Math, Science, and maybe foreign language if he is strong in one (although be careful cause the foreign language tests are much more difficult for people not fluent in the language!)

do not have him take it now!!!
he's only a sophomore and has plenty of time.
even right after taking honors chem i did very poorly on the chem sat ii even though i received the award in the class for the highest average. most of the information on the subject test is not taught until AP level, especially equilibrium.

and agree with jerseyyyy21 about the math. take that right away. calc II! impressive!

and 2-3 is fine also.
