Hi. I'm only a soon-to-be junior. Though it's premature to some, I'm starting to seriously consider what I have to accomplish to make an acceptance to Columbia a possibility. I just took my first SAT II today (isn't that cute? =). I don't think I did wonderfully, though I am paranoid with this sort of thing. Hypothetically speaking, let's say I bombed that miserably (I haven't the SLIGHTEST how I did, but let's say oh... a 500 or something, just for ****s and giggles). I'm anticipating a 650-680, but expecting the worst is preperation. If I resurrected myself with the SAT I and 2+ SAT II's in other subjects, had commendable EC's, a persuasive essay, recommendations, and an impressive class rank... what are my chances? Does one blah-zay SAT II score destroy your chances of admission entirely? Lay it on me, honesty is appreciated.

Sorry this is so long, and thank you in advance.

If you had commendable EC's, a persuasive essay, great recommendations, an impressive class rank, and a resurrected test score cluster, I would say "see you on campus," because you pretty much nailed everything that every competitive college is looking for. Unfortunately, however, lots of people who try for Columbia expect to have these things upon applying, but few actually do. It's way too early to tell, having just finished your sophomore year. Concentrate on doing well in school and come back in a year or so. And if by chance you get rejected with a single SAT II score of 650, the adcoms probably wouldn't change their mind if you had scored 50-100 points higher on that one test, because IMO admissions is much more holistic than that. They wouldn't turn down an applicant that they think has a lot of potential just because of 70 points or so on a single test, just as they wouldn't accept an applicant they don't think would do as well just because of a single relatively high score.
