SAT math symbols

on a math question (from the blue book), there was a question that looked like:

"For all positive integers x, let x(triangle sign) be defined to be (x-1)(x+1). Which of the following is equal to 6(triangle sign) - 5(triangle sign)"

What is that triangle sign?

And can anyone provide a list of SAT math symbols that aren't commonly used?

The actual sign isn’t important. What is important is what the test defines the sign to mean.

For example, let’s say I tell you x$y is defined as x^2 + y, and I want you to figure out 3$5. That’d simply be (3)^2 + 5 = 14. You apply the same logic to all symbol questions.

thanks that helps a lot :p
