My sophomore daughter took a practice SAT this past weekend with Kaplan and scored 750 for math and 710 on the verbal section. She did zero prep (she just dd a few sample questions online the night before). How much on average can someone expect to increase their scores with prep?
Really depends on the types of questions that were missed. If time were an issue, or if there were a number of careless errors (either from not reading the questions correctly or stemming from time issues), there is a good chance for material improvement with practice.
Thanks… she said she was not particularly rushed. Not sure what type of questions she missed. She just turned 15, so I am assuming she should be able to increase her scores in the next couple of years with some prep.
Yes. You should get some practice test books (including the College Board’s edition). They will usually label the questions as easy, medium and hard in the answer key as well as provide an explanation.
Our S19 went from a practice test of 690 EW, 740 math to a 740 EW, 800 math just by studying on his own over the summer between sophomore and junior year. Took the real test in August of junior year and got that 1540. Your D is starting at a great spot. If she completes algebra 2/trig by sophomore year, I suggest she follow the same path as our S19 and get standardized testing out of the way early junior year.
Our S19 took algebra 2/trig as a freshman so he had to spend time going back and reviewing some concepts but it all came back pretty quickly to him. The English section of EW is also easy to study for. He spent the majority of his time practicing Reading sections over and over…
Thanks for the input! Yes, she plans to study over next summer and take it at the beginning of junior year to get it out of the way. She actually already completed trig/precalc freshman year and is currently taking AP Calc now as a sophomore… so she is a bit ahead in terms of math.
