SAT Prep Help?

So I’m looking for some good SAT prep courses to prepare myself for the new one but I’m really conflicted on which program to choose.

I’m definitely planning on doing a lot of self-study as I find that I retain the most information from that, and using the blue book from the college board.

But my parents and I both agree that it wouldn’t hurt to try out some SAT prep as well but we’re all not sure which is good for me. I find that I study well on my own, with books, relating topics to everyday life, and visual learning.

I have 2 options : The Kaplan unlimited prep course or the Elite Summer SAT prep.

For Kaplan, I’m most comfortable with it because it’s not as expensive as Elite. My parents say I could choose Elite if I wanted to but it makes me feel better if I’m not spending too much of their money. Also, I’m more familiar with Kaplan because I used their book to study for an AP exam. I like their teaching curriculum but I’m afraid I won’t be able to balance school, extracurriculars, and SAT Prep during the school year. I just wish they had summer classes.

For Elite, it’s much more expensive than Kaplan. However, a lot of my peers and my parents’ friends only have good words when it comes to Elite. But I also know that Elite mainly focuses on practice, practice, practice and some of my friends have advised me that it’s not worth it to take Elite and that I should just buy their materials and take their practice test. I’m also not familiar with their teaching curriculum, as it seems like they emphasize more on copious amounts of practice which I could just do on my own.

So, which should I choose? They’re both companies and I’d like to hear about experiences at both of these places.

I’ve heard that the Kaplan book is pretty unhelpful and kind of based on the old SAT… I’m not sure if this translates to the prep book?

I’m also self-studying mostly, and I’m using some new private tutor books (in addition to the blue book) like PWN the SAT Math Guide and Erica Meltzer stuff for English (worked really well for a cousin last year!). I also think Khan Academy is pretty good, especially if you get the paid version (300 bucks) which is less than most whole courses like Elite. Good idea to get the Elite books, a lot of friends swear by them and they’d be a great addition; if you get all of these books I might just go with the Kaplan course, as you don’t even know if the course format really works for you. However, if you choose not to go with extra material, the Elite course could be worth it- I’ve also heard only good things. Hope this helps a little, in the end it’s up to you!

Do the collegeboard practice tests, they are the most accurate and like the real sat.

I took the SAT

Thank you! Did you take any prep courses at all or are you only self-studying? And if so, how are you managing your time to study?

@morethanschool , “I also think Khan Academy is pretty good, especially if you get the paid version (300 bucks)”

What do you mean “paid version”? I thought Khan was free?

I had a tutor but all he taught us was from the collegeboard tests. When I took the actual SAT, I found it to be very similar. I did do a little khan academy practice but many of the questions weren’t like anything in the actual SAT. But it is good practice to prepare for it.

@mmk2015 @morethanschool
There is no paid version on Khan Academy. Every single piece of content on their website is free and non for profit.
I believe @morethanschool meant $300 for the Kaplan course.

^That’s what I thought, but had to check.
Thanks for clearing that up!

Someone asked a similar question somewhere else. (To be exact, they were asking if Khan Academy would be enough preparation or should they go to some institution.) I’m just going to quote my response here.

“There is no set answer for that question. Some people can pick things up easily while others need more guidance. If you tend to score well (“well” is dependent on your personal goal) on the exercises, quizzes, and practice exams provided by Khan Academy, then that may be enough for you. If not, turn to other resources. If you have faith and confidence in yourself and are self-motivated, try getting a review book (good list here: http://blog.prepscholar.com/best-sat-prep-books). Work with the books that concern your weak-points, and make sure to actively read the books and study effectively (not passively). If you feel you need a guide who can help you learn how to take the test and really pinpoint your weaknesses, then get a tutor or join some institution. If you are getting a tutor, though, make sure you get one who is experienced (this is almost impossible, unfortunately, due to the remake of the whole exam).”

Guys can you please reco a good resource for SAT Math prep.

While going for Sat tutoring for the child, few are very important to be taken into consideration. The selection of the tutoring center or the private tutor depends on the your requirement. Since, if your child or yourself need special attention for his/ her studies, then it is better to go for a private or individual tutor. But if you just need some extra help your understanding then you may also prefer tutoring center. If you are looking for some more information regarding this you can also find some info on this google page, https://plus.google.com/116360455800717537499, to choose the best options for your tutoring needs.
