SAT Prep WAYS?

Hello I really have to being preparing for the SAT that i'm probably going to take in May. I am currently in this program that provides free SAT Prep classes. But I've still noticed that I need to do independent study to get a desirable score.

We are currently using College Board The Official SAT Study Guide

I took the PSAT and my scores were...
47: Reading
47: Mathematics
39: Writing Skills

I've heard that speed reading and latin are helpful for the English part of the SAT.

Any suggestions that I should begin doing to prepare for the SAT? Ways to improve and identify properly vocabulary, books that i should read to improve my English skills, how to improve my writing skills,
Any websites/resources/techniques that would benefit me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

if you want to improve on individual sections, perhaps buying some specific review books that go more in-depth will benefit you. I have Gruber’s Math Workbook and Barron’s Writing Workbook but I haven’t used them very much. Writing used to be my worst section and now it’s my best (52 sophomore PSAT to 760 on practice tests), probably because I have found the patterns in types of errors that the SATs use on tests. Yes Latin roots really help! Also, find a specific essay writing style that you like and is the most effective in getting that 12 (or near it). It would probably be a good idea to look through the Stickied posts on this forum.

How did you majorly improve your writing ? I don’t understand when you said different writing styles. Can you provide examples? Thanks

Lots and lots of practice tests. Between my soph PSAT and last practice test (approx 1 year and 4 months) I took a weekly SAT prep class and then a winter bootcamp over Winter Break. The most valuable thing from the prep course was the multitude of practice tests I took there. In Writing Class I would always zone off haha cuz honestly grammar is so boring to me, to this day I still would not be able to define a past participle phrase. After like 16 practice tests and really going over them in class, I began to recognize many of my errors. Since you are studying on your own, make sure you REALLY REALLY look at your mistakes and understand why something is wrong (or not wrong) and you will start to see the common errors that are in the SATs. Hope that makes sense!

Here is the link I suggested. By writing style, I meant a sort of formula that works for you. This formula in the link is not perfect, it should be tweaked for every writer because everyone has their own style. For example, instead of using three examples like this thread suggests, I only use one example, and two or three aspects of that example. That worked really well for me at my prep school but I just took the January SAT so I guess we’ll see how the Collegeboard readers liked it! Definitely, definitely take the SATs with several examples in mind that you can use for different types of prompts.

Thank you so much :)
