SAT Score = No Chance?

lol..jeez sorry guys!..ofcourse south asians are xtremely smart! let me be specific. A LOT Of indians apply! Pakistanis less. Bangladeshis-lesser. If they see that you stand out and have to offer more than SAT's then they'll take u, coz you are adding diversity to the region. Even though minorities arent a big thing in ivies, coz they do get them one way or the other, still in the back of their minds- they would see minorities! Same is the case with blacks, latinos etc! get my point?
im sayin this coz i met a south asian with an 1160 and she got in coz she had a perfect gpa and a lot of EC's!..so, dont worry!...and im_collegebound, are you s.a?

How is that fair? I know they want racially diverse because they don't want "all the same people" and neither do I. I don't want to go to a school where every single person looks just like me. However, I don't feel that my chances of acceptance should be at all dependant on what color makeup I use.

Why cant you take the one in december or january? Also, if you really want to go to Columbia then you could always transfer. So dont worry!

In December I have to take the SAT IIs. And taking the SAT I again in January wouldn't do any good, since the application is due on January 3. Yes, I could always transfer, but if they wouldn't accept me as an entering first-year with crappy SAT scores, why would they accept me as a transfering sophomore with crappy SAT scores?

ahh.. let's not have racial bias or prejudice here guys..

and let me just say one thing
I agree with whoever said F U K the SATs.

Honestly , they are a load of crap!!!!! So glad I never have to deal with SAT (1 and 2) ever again in my lifeeeeee

If my post was viewed as racist or prejudiced, then I apologize for that because that wasn't my intention at all. It just gets really frusturating sometimes to hear that, "Well, no, you probably won't get in, you don't have a shot at ANY school, but you'd really have a great chance if you were African-American/Asian/Latino/ethnicity of your choice." I feel like if I and another student are equally qualified in all ways, then admission should be hinged on an interview or something--not just a bonus point. I wouldn't want to be accepted simply because I happen to be in the racial majority anyway--I want to be accepted on whether or not Columbia (or any other college) thinks that I would be a good match for their school.

Anyway. I finally got logged onto College Board and I went from 1180 to 1300. (M: 540; V: 760.) Do you think I have a smidge of a chance now? It's still not in Columbia's set of scores but it's a lot closer than before. I have to go work on my essay since I'm going to need something awesome and amazing regardless of the SAT scores.

SAT's is not really the determining factor, I had friends with 1000ish and still got in. You ppl sound soooooooo stupid when you "will I get in" with low/high sat score

I hear you catnamedzane ! I think if i were a minority i wuld have a better chance... o well...
michele

haha naw..arsalan im chinese

i don't think international students have it any easier..
apparantly the competition amongst international students is even more fierce..

and the whole minority thing..
guys, if you're well qualified and columbia wants you.. it doesn't matter what race you are. if you're meant to get in, you will.

o.. question.... what is a BAD SAT 2 scores..?
a bad score for columbia...

I think you should try applying. You're EC's seem really good!

hey guys

reading this has really got me wondering

i'm an international student from india

i visited the columbia campus in 2002 ( a long time ago ) for their first ever Model UN conference and fell in love almost instantaneously

my SAT score is 1330 and my SAT II scores just suck (580 math, 620 writing, 620 lit)

I have some pretty great ECs and excellent reccs

dyu think the fact that i won best delegate at the columbia MUN conference helps???

its a helluva long shot for me specially since even if im miraculously accepted ill still need financial aid (which they give to 2% of international applicants)
i gave up the idea that columbia was the place for me because of this but am still sending an enthusiastic application later on

the things most in my favour is my strong dedication to drama since age 6 and since then ive only had starring roles and have written, directed and starred in many productions both professional and school level

im not giving up hope and still will apply, because someone once told me that all you have to do is make the person reading your application like you and remember you in those 10-15 minutes - thats all it really takes
scores dont matter that much because its the potential thats whats important

best of luck to you all

wait arsalan..i thought south asains get screwed with sat scores like 1190..?i thought we're in the same boat as all asians period..anyway...when u guys say write "great essays"..what do u mean?..first of all im a horrible writer..second i dont know what to write about..what makes a great essay?..what content?..sorry cat for asking so many questions on your thread..but i neeed to knoww..great essays?..what does that mean?

o yeh btw..i should write im bengali?..where do i wrote that..freak that..lets face the facts..colleges do want minorities..when i go to visit colleges..they stress that native americans/african americans or any minorities should apply to their college..they even say they have a great chance so they better apply and not get scared(and o yeah they know they arent getting my application money..fee waviers rock!)..soo lets just face the facts..

where can i put im bengali?..doesnt ask where from asia on the apps

hey
i lived in calcutta for 13 years im not a bengali though - i guess you could put it under other and then write Indian-bengali or something maybe write it in as a language you speak or something

Asians are an overrepresented minority. The Ivies are 40% Asian. Being Asian doesn't help you at all.

after u click ur race they ask u to specify if u want..so u can write where ur from or bengali or something..asians r asians..we arent really considered a minority cuz there r so many of us

yeh..thats what i thought..erm..but hey what makes a great essay?..ppl keep sayin that(write a great essay)..what makes a great personal statement?...honestly..what do the admissions ppl find interestin..confused

i have a 1350, but both of my teacher recommendations are pretty good... (they both put one of hte best in their career for everything)
