Sorry if this is the wrong forum to ask this question (redirection would be appreciated if that's the case), but I was just wondering if anyone know how long SAT scores are valid for Stanford in particular.

I've read that for many schools it can be about 5 years, but that it also varies widely. Does anyone know where I can find this information? I looked on Stanford's site and didn't see anything about how long.

I’m sorry no one got to respond. Thankfully, however, Stanford got back to me via email and for anyone who is curious, they accept SAT scores of at least nine years back (as was the case for me) and I suspect that it might be even longer.

Unfortunately, I think Stanford may have told you only half the story. So you better contact again and get clarification. The issue is that in 2005 the SAT test changed to include a writing section. The result of that is that colleges thereafter accepted the old SAT for about a year but then started requiring the new SAT with the writing section. Stanford is among those and even though it will consider pre-2005 SATs that only occurs if you also submit the required new SAT with writing. In other words, you need to submit an SAT with writing, meaning a test taken after Feb 2005. Then, if you also submit an older SAT it will be considered in determining your actual scores for admission since Stanford uses the highest subscores from multiple tests to determine actual score for admission, meaning if your old SAT has a higher math and/or reading score than your new SAT score, those older scores will be ones used to determine your total score for admission along with the writing score of the new test. What I do not know is whether Stanford will make some kind of special exception from that rule for someone who has been out of high school a long time. You will find that the need to submit the new SAT is the rule at most colleges even though for determining actual score for admission they may consider tests taken before March 2005.
