I just took the January SAT today for the first time.
I looked at the scoring chart form collegeboard and I don't get why the scores can vary even though you got certain number of questions wrong.
For example, why can getting 5 wrong on reading range from 720~750?

Different tests give different scales

For example (making the numbers up)

January 2008 may have had an extremely hard reading section, where 5 wrong would be a 750
But March 2009 may have had a very easy reading section, where 3 wrong is a 720

Again, numbers are made up, but that’s basically it

They decide the curve after they get the scores

Each wrong answer gets -.25, and you don’t get credit for anything you omit. Its scale is based on scores received that year
