*SAT Subject Test Biology E/M June 2016 Discussion Thread*

@mastersuperfan that’s what i said too. I ended up guessing because I had no idea

@mastersuperfan I think it’s right because the other answers were kind of weird

wait do u guys know that question with the white sand and black dust and the aerial predators?

lol hey kat

I believe it was evidence that they evolved from photosynthetic prokaryotes. The reason why I don’t think it was the calvin cycle enzymes one was because the question said that Archaea and nonphotosynthetic bacteria have enzymes LIKE those in the Calvin Cycle, not the same ones.

@katspotatoes was that in the E section?

i think i said that too idk

I said that black mice and white mice would be selected for

so it was the 2 different phenotypes?

was the enzyme question the substrate was used up

does anyone remember the choices for the calvin cycle question

@katspotatoes was that the one with the wolves and the foxes and white and black rabbits?

@Spiog I considered that but eventually decided against it because neither nonphotosynthetic bacteria nor archaea were involved in the endosymbiotic evolution of chloroplasts; it was cyanobacteria that evolved into chloroplasts. Furthermore, I also feel like the usage of “enzymes LIKE those used in the Calvin cycle” highlights the fact that they’re not the same, but I would expect them to be the same if chloroplasts evolved directly from bacteria with those enzymes.

One more thing I’d like to say is also related to why I ruled out choice ©: that the Calvin cycle evolved before the light-dependent reactions. Since the Calvin cycle requires products of the light-dependent reactions, it seems unnatural that the Calvin cycle and its enzymes would evolve before the light-depending reactions did. Since those bacteria and archaea are nonphotosynthetic, it further implies that those enzymes evolved before the light-dependent reactions, which doesn’t seem logical to me.

I definitely understand your point, yet at the same time the complex manner in which the question and answer choices are written lead me to believe that the information given isn’t a very strong indicator of your answer choice.

@comeonmrtan I remember two of the choices were completely illogical. The three that remained were something like:

  • Eukaryotes evolved from endosymbiosis of photosynthetic organisms
  • The Calvin cycle evolved before the light-dependent reactions
  • Plants today use enzymes from the Calvin cycle for nonphotosynthetic functions (which I chose)

@nytestguy ya I think that’s the one

do any of you guys know the answer to that frog question?

@katspotatoes The one with toxins? It’s because frogs have thin, permeable skin.

This question was annoying but did you guys put ATP produces energy? Or did you put ATP provides energy for biosynthesis. I was really annoyed by the wording of this question because ATP doesn’t really produce energy it provides it, but it provides it for things other than biosynthesis.

@katspotatoes the last two choices in that question were talking about wolves, and not foxes. However, the question stated that foxes were the ones that detected rabbits by sight. So, I put that the number of white rabbits would increase to blend in with the snow… correct me if im wrong my ecology isn’t that good.

I said it provides energy for biosynthesis, since energy can’t be produced. I feel like the objective of the question was more to know that it doesn’t “produce” energy, moreso than to know that it provides energy for other functions.

@Spiog I remember that question’s wording was confusing… what is bio synthesis
