I’m planning to apply to CMU’s business school and still need to decide which SAT subject test to take. CMU recommended that if that where we plan to apply we should take math two and one other (preferably science) test. What other subject test should I take? Any science tests easy? Would they mind too much if I took say US history instead of a science? Also how much do the result really matter in their decision?
I’m not sure about cmu’s policy on subject tests, but if you are taking a science one, just go for whichever subject you’re strongest in. I personally took physics and thought it was a good choice, especially since the generous curve makes it easy to get a 800 (if you have some physics background).
@stswtbk I’ve taken AP physics 1. Do you think the subject test covers more topics than are covered in physics 1?
Yes it does. S had to self study the material he had not yet reached in AP Physics 2. Just leave yourself enough time to work through the material and to get help from your physics teacher or whoever if you need it. He did very well on the test having taken Physics 1, was 1 quarter in to Physics 2 and then hit the prep book for the rest with some tutoring from a friend who used to be a physics teacher.
Sorry I wouldnt know, I only took physics C. Some of the topics in the subject test (like lens and waves) aren’t covered in physics C, so that might be the case for physics 1 too. I think the most important thing is having a solid physics foundation. If you did well in physics 1 and the AP test without trouble, you should be able to catch up on any topics missed easily. I went through a formula sheet and did two practice tests, which helped me with the topics I wasn’t familiar with.
Also, you can try going through a practice test initially to see where you stand, then you can decide whether you should pursue the physics subject test or perhaps another science subject test. But yeah definitely leave yourself plenty of time to learn about or review the topics covered, and there are lots of resources out there to use.
