SAT Subject Tests

Hey everybody! I am in my junior year and had not taken any subject tests until this year. I took a Math 1 in May and a US History and scored a 720 and 790 respectively. I plan on taking a physics SAT in June. What scores should I aim for? Should I retake Math 1 or try Math 2? How much does CMU care about subject SAT's? Thanks for your time!

Subject tests are reasonably important. It depends on which college you’re applying to, but if you’re going to one of the “mathy” ones (CIT/MCS/SCS) then taking Math II might not be a bad idea. Math II has harder questions but it has a bigger curve so it isn’t really harder to get a good score. Depending on the college you apply to you may need a science SAT subject test (like physics). As far as what scores you need, there’s no real number. Higher is better and it’s on a continuum. With that being said scores in the 700’s are pretty good, and I wouldn’t be too worried about those.

If you’re applying to CIT or SCS, I’d say aim for 700s. For SCS aim for 750+ but I know a girl who got in to SCS with a 690 in physics so it’s doable with around a 700. I agree that you should also take math 2.

“girl”
Maybe that was the reason?

Sorry for bumping this but if I’m applying to CIT a 790 in Math II should be fine or no? And physics I want to aim for 800 as I’m going to take it in December but realistically I’m looking at just 730+.
