Do MT Majors need to take any SAT Subject Tests? I’ve looked at a lot of college websites and others (like CollegeXpress), but most don’t have that field written in. Thanks in advance for any help!
If you’re looking at Northwestern, the general application for the university says that 2 SAT subject tests are recommended and since you apply to the university, not directly to the MT program and they don’t do an upfront audition, I’m thinking you should submit them there. That’s the only one I’ve noticed so far though.
Right, most BFA in MT programs, and even most BA MT programs do not require SAT Subject Tests.
Northwestern recommends them, even though they are not required.
NYU has options whereby you can submit EITHER the ACT, the SAT, 3 SAT Subject Tests or 3 AP scores.
Even though not required, if you submit SAT Subject Test scores to other schools, they may be considered.
Generally, most MT applicants applying to just MT schools tend not to take the Subject Tests. However, when my D applied to only BFA in MT programs, she did submit her SAT Subject Tests in addition to her SAT scores. Her Subject Test scores were quite high and while I have no way of knowing this, I feel they only enhanced her application and didn’t take away from it. She took all the tests in tenth grade before we looked into the test requirements for her colleges. In some ways, though I have no clue if this is true, perhaps the high test scores helped to show that she was ready for college even though she was graduating HS at 16, though that is not why we submitted the scores.
So, you don’t have to take the SAT Subject Tests, but if you have scored well on them, it can’t hurt to submit them.
Thank you @ourturn2 and @soozievt. My D is in 11th grade but has not taken any Subject Tests. She has taken the SAT and we are awaiting scores for the ACT. She definitely wants BFA in MT. Just trying to figure out our path of what else needs to be done on this journey.
@soozievt - I don’t think a high score in a standardized test ever “hurt” anyone. But whether you need them is a different story. As has often been discussed- some great mt programs are at schools that are not academically competitive. If those are the schools on your list- no subject tests needed. If, however, you are looking at schools that are competitive or have a higher threshold (northwestern as mentioned above, NYU, or maybe Michigan) you might want I give it a look. My D Did ACT rather than SAT, so I don’t have personal experience with subject tests, but my kid was academically accepted to every school she applied to except an Ivy (including competitive) without
^^Yeah, that’s why I said it “can’t hurt” to submit high scores on standardized tests even if they are not required. Either they will be considered or ignored. But if considered, they should be beneficial to the candidate if high scores.
