Is there much point in taking an SAT subject test, if the kid is not taking the Honors or AP level of the subject? We have gotten conflicting advice. Please assume that the HS is a well-regarded, competitive Northeastern "public prep" type where most non-Honors kids are still going on to 4-year schools.

FWIW, the student's target colleges probably will not require SAT subject tests, but the student still has some interest in doing it, to see how it will go, and in the hope that it might enhance an application if it goes well.

I assume that score choice is alive and well as to subject tests -- if they go badly, and they're not required anyway, you just don't send them?

Yes. You could get the big blue book that has a sample practice test for each subject. My kids found their scores correlated very well with what they actually got. If he can score over 600 as a non-honors kid it would probably help him.

There is really no reason not to take the tests other than paying for them. I don’t know of any schools that give “credit” for SATII’s but some use them for placement- foreign languages, etc. so if that is of consideration, might be worth taking. The only reason to take AP tests is if your college gives you credit or placement for your score on those and a lot of kids opt not to take those tests if they don’t give them any advantage in college.
