SAT Subject Tests : Highly recommended?

I know some colleges require SAT subject tests but others ecommend taking them. Stanford, for example. Even though the subject tests are only recommended I see that a lot of applicants have taken them. So say I want to apply to Stanford. Should I take them? I'm not too confident that I would do well. I just found out WHAT the SAT II was a few months ago so my scores might end up being less than stellar. (I'm devoting a lot of my time to the SAT I) I don't want to be at a disadvantage by not taking them.

Sorry if this has been covered before. =] I perused the board and search engine for a similar topic but I didn't see anything.

I'd take them. You don't want to to be shut out of applying to a college because you didn't take them.

I guess I'm just worried that I might be stretching myself too thin by studying the SAT I & II and I'll end up with unimpressive scores in both.

I'm assuming you're a junior... You have a whole year, that's plenty of time to perfect both of the tests.

if you want to apply to stanford, remember... usually the most competitive applicants have good SAT/ACT and good SAT subject test scores. so... i would take them.

just some food for thought :)

"Recommend" does not mean "required" except for all practicable purposes -- consider: most who apply to Stanford will submit them and those are the applicants you are competing with; if you do not submit them and get rejected you will probably believe for the rest of your life it is because you failed to submit IIs.

You cannot take the IIs on the same date you take the SAT. Many take the SAT late junior year and the IIs in Fall of senior, meaning they have plenty of time to prepare for both.
