SAT Subject Tests & School Grades

My friend is a wonderful student but has always had problems in our Honors Math Class, which has a lot of grade deflation such that most of the students receive B's for the year. This is a top public high school in the nation so maybe the colleges would understand the grade deflation?

I was wondering, how do colleges perceive SAT and SAT Subject Test scores? As in lets say you got a B's in math, and you got 800 SAT Math, and 800 Math II. Would they consider your grade to be grade deflation and that you are capable in math and be more lax about that aspect of your application, or would they still be wary because of your grade. What if those B's in math are the only non-A grades on your transcript.

You should re-post this in the “admissions” board–you’d get better responses there.

But my 2 cents: adcoms look at everything in context, so you’re right in thinking that they would understand grade deflation, especially when they see a) the school’s reputation and b) the SAT II scores. And given that the majority of his grades are A’s, an adcom would be much less inclined to chalk it up to laziness. The B’s wouldn’t be “forgiven,” but they would be understood.

I personally think that SAT 2’s definitely place an applicant’s grades in context and help make clear the level of grade inflation (or deflation) within a school.
