I have always done poorly in my high school math courses, scoring B’s and C’s. Now that I am past those courses and have a higher level of understanding in them, would look good to colleges to take a SAT Subject Test in Math to show them I have (hopefully) mastered the topics better? Or does it not matter?
It certainly won’t hurt your application if you have a very good SAT2 to report, but no one can predict how any particular college will use that info. It will be one small piece of your application. Your transcript and grades hold a lot of weight in admissions because they show your ability and effort over the course of months and years, something a one hour test (that you can prep for) will not.
Some schools care a lot about grades, and for those, what’s done is done. Get your act together now, and some schools may see you as a late bloomer. If you have good test scores, it will show that you have the ability and have been an underachiever. There are schools that are willing to take that risk.
Your objective now is to show you are capable by improving your grades and having good test scores.
Most colleges do not require SAT2s – so your efforts might be better served ensuring As in your present coursework. Please check your target school’s requirements before expending energy on something that may not do anything for you. Good luck
A high score on the Math level 1 or 2 could potentially offset lower grades- it shows you have the ability. Depends on each school though. It’s the same way a high AP exam score could offset a lower grade- it may prove to the college you either struggled in the class, or maybe had a bad teacher. Likely, it couldn’t hurt you.
Alright, thanks guys! I think I’ll just work on improving my current grades.
Improving is probably best in the end. High test scores and mediocre grades just screams lazy anyways.
