SAT Subjects Test for Harvard & Princeton

Hi everyone!

Both Harvard and Princeton recommend that an applicant submit two subject tests. Do you guys think my admission chances will change if I have only taken one? Here are my specifics:

I go to a top prep school in the Deep South. Applying for Math/CS major.

Family income: $500,000+
ACT: 36
GPA: 3.98
SAT II: 800 Math 2
Relevant Coursework (Grade 9-11): Calculus 1-3, Modern Algebra, Chaos Theory, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Vector Calculus, Topology, C++, JAVA.

I know admission to both of these schools is a crapshoot, but I’m wondering what Harvard and Princeton will think of me only taking one subject test, as opposed to two. I learned about subject tests way too late in the admissions process (they’re not prevalent in the South), and the Harvard and Princeton sites make it seem as if the only reason one can submit less than two tests is financial hardship.

Thanks and sorry for any issues, this is my first post!

Your stats seem great besides lacking a subject test. I think you should contact schools you’re applying to and request that they accept your application with only one subject test. I feel that they’ll let you apply with one subject test as long as you’re sincere and politely request a waiver.

They use the word recommended to give an out to low income students who can’t afford to take the additional tests. That obviously doesn’t apply in your case so you will be docked for not having the second test. As to whether that will be the issue that prevents you from getting in, who knows. And not knowing about the test requirement won’t fly. It’s published online.

IMO, you shouldn’t worry.

From the Harvard website:

The decision whether to take Subject Tests is entirely up to you. You should ask yourself whether other academic credentials … adequately represent your suitability for studying at Harvard. If there is any doubt, you should take two Subject Tests.
