Personally, all I did for the October test was study from the official SAT book the week before. I probably studied around 1 hour everyday Monday-Friday. On Friday I studied maybe 3 hours. Most of my study consisted of going over the writing sections of 8 practice tests and memorizing the grammar rules, it wasn't until Friday night that I even looked at Math or Critical Reading (I really couldn't study for them).

So I think if you really want a 200-300 point increase you should get the official SAT book, go through the practice tests, and STUDY!!!

Hopefully I can have an ACT success story pretty soon... (I got a 32 last time and I retook in October).

That isn't such a success story compared to mine and ivyleague07's.

I took the SAT this May and got such an average score (1810):
CR- 540
Math- 620
Writing- 650 (MC:64, Essay:9)

And then I retook it just this October and got such a good score (for me, anyway):
CR- 740
Math- 640
Writing- 790 (MC:79, Essay:10)
Combined- 2170

Sort of sucked for me though 'cause I know could've done better in Math. I don't know what happened. If I had gotten a 700 there my combined would be waaay higher. And if I didn't get that one mistake in writing I could've gotten an 800. :( But hey, I'll take what I can get!

When I created this thread I did not post my scores for comparative purposes; I wanted to share my success and show how I attained such a big leap in my scores so that others can potentially use my study methods to do better. So rather than compare our score differences I would suggest that you post what you did to attain such a high score to help other CCer's...

HEy suave.. how did you study to achieve such a boost
and for those of you with high C.R. scores ... does the vocab just come naturally or did u study it from something

Studied for 2 weeks and did 4 practice tests and improved 310 points from January: 560 Reading / 620 Math / 680 Writing (1860)
to
October: 660 Reading / 710 Math / 800 Writing (2170)

900 hours is over 36 straight days. That's just wrong. The SAT isn't made for kids to just sit home and study all day, that completely ruins the point. If everyone studied that much, I bet most people could score that high. Ugh.

wow this really brings Hope To all Those Who Did bad on the SAT/Practice tests
Btw Joanee49 how did you study for the vocab ? I See that u have improved ur CR score by 200 POints!!! Any tips?
Keeep Em Coming Guys

I sort of agree 19382, but colleges do want those people. If you are willing to study 900 hours for the SAT so you can get into a good college, that shows dedication. Dedication should be rewarded. If everyone was that dedicated I could see your point more clearly, but no dedication in HS and low scores on the SAT hardly bode well for the amount of studying a student will do in college and as a result- how well they will do.

shadow asked a legitimate question. i dont think he is downplaying it at all. its an impressive increase and with all the stories about CB screwing up, they probably should investigate to see if one (possibly the lower) is wrong.
