New member here. I have heard from some people that although most colleges will accept scores from either the SAT or ACT, most prefer the SAT and will not view ACT scores as equal to similar SAT scores on the SAT/ACT concordance. Is there any validity to this claim? Has anyone heard anything similar? I'm taking the ACT in December so naturally, hearing this made me a little uneasy.

Many people assume that the ACT is not as valued as the SAT is just because more people take the SAT; however, this is not the case. They are both valued the same and colleges have no preference to either one: just do what works for you.

Also, rather than listening to anyone on CC, I suggest you just call the college and ask them directly.

This is obviously true seeing that several top colleges only require the ACT or both the SAT and two subject tests because they think the ACT is inferior to the SAT.

No need to be a jerk, cjgone. The guy just joined this month and was simply asking a question. To answer your question, OP, no, colleges do not consider one test’s score more favorably than the other unless the college specifically says it does. Check with your colleges beforehand to confirm.

You might view this assertion as “absurd”, but do not forget that this member joined CC this month. You would not believe the widespread misconceptions regarding the SAT and ACT that exist outside of CC. Just a few days ago, in fact, a friend of mine told me that he wouldn’t be taking the ACT in December because his ACT tutor had told him that the December testing date was the “hardest” of all the testing dates. How was he supposed to know any better without ever having been on CC?
