I took the SAT in March and got 590 on the critical reading (missed 5 sentence completion). I take it again on June 2nd and I was hoping to go up at least 100 points (that's my goal). I've heard that some people like memorizing root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Others like reading word lists like Direct Hits. Knowing that the test is 1.5 months away, what do you recommend?

Thanks!

Oops I meant to type Vocabulary.

bump, i want this question answered too!

What people keep telling you is true–read, read, read. It truly helps. I read very quickly, enjoy it, and took 3 years of Latin. As a result, I missed just one question on my SAT critical reading score.

But since you have just a month and a half, I’d recommend drilling yourself over old SAT sections AND old AP tests. Besides just answering the questions, look up the other word choices and know those words as well.
Every other day, flip through the dictionary to any words that are interesting–and read the entire entry, including the etymology.
If you really think that suffix, prefix, and roots will help you, it won’t be difficult to find a list online.

Out of all these techniques, the first will benefit you the most on such short notice.

If you’re concerned about the sentence completion part:

Memorize words. There’s no getting around it, unfortunately. Lists of words from Direct Hits work well. Or just google “SAT Vocabulary,” I’m sure plenty of results will pop up.

If you’re concerned about the reading comprehension part:

Practice old critical reading sections on previous tests under real testing conditions. Over-analyze every mistake you made. Understand WHY you made those mistakes and LEARN from them. (Did I not read the article closely enough? Did I not refer back to the word in context of the paragraph? Did I rush?) Don’t make the same mistakes next time.

i have the same problem, actually
i’m taking my test in june so it’s more or less 1,5 months from now and my vocabs still sucks LOL
but to increase my chances of answering most of the vocabs questions right, i bought the princeton review’s essential sat vocabularies. it’s a flashcard with around 450 words in it.
i think it’s helpful, you should try it :)
