I have heard from many people that the SAT is favored over the ACT, especially on the East Coast. My question for all of you is to what extent this is true? In regard to many of the top schools, such as Duke, Brown, Columbia, Rice, Pomona, Stanford, UC Berkley, etc, does it really matter if you send in a good ACT score and not a SAT?

Colleges accept either. One isn’t preferred over the other. Also, preference varies from student to student.

If the ACT is accepted as an alternative to the SAT, there is no secret preference of one over the other.

It used to be that students on the coasts more frequently took the SAT while students in the middle states more frequently took the ACT. Check out this map: <a href=“SAT and ACT Test Popularity - Which test is more popular in your state?”>http://www.studypoint.com/ed/sat-and-act-test/.

Not sure if that’s true anymore. Schools that accept both will not care about one over the other.
