sat writing MC question

Contrasting with most other fifteenth century rulers, Portuguese kings could count on the support of the aristocracy in any overseas adventure.

The answer is the words "contrasting with." (this is a find whats wrong question.) how come, i dont understand.

i think it should be contrasting from? Its an idiomatic error. You just have to memorize the idioms

I don't think from or with is necessary in this sentence. The word "contrasting" is enough.

ohhhh yea Tickle u right

uhh no. that would mean that the kings are contrasting things. i think the sentence is trying to say port. kings are different from other kings

how tm?? contrasting with other 15th C rulers, Port Kings..... doesnt the sentence say rulers, and kings are rulers? Mayeb the error should be to take out most and leave the sentence as it is. Are u sure tm that thats the right answer?

Actually I got this one wrong as well, I beleive that it was in the College Board's Study Guide... Correct?

perhaps it was an error?

It should be "In contrast with..."

Contrasting with is awkward

I dont remember this question, and I did all the tests from the blue book, so I'd say probably not though I could be wrong. Anyway, on this past SAT of mine, there was a question where the error was "Contesting against" because it was an incorrect idiom usage.

It sounds wrong:

should be:

"Unlike most other..."

idiotmatic errors? where is there a list of them? oh lord, maybe this is why my writing score was bad

matty isn't it "In contrast to"

I believe "in contrast to" is correct, yes.
