SAt writing q

Can you guys help me out and tell me why the "contrasting with" is incorrect. Is it suppose to be "unlike"? As far as I know "contrasting with" is grammatically correct, but apparently not. Heres the original question, its from the blue college board book, pg 417, q 29

Contrasting with most other fifteenth-century rulers, Portuguese kings could count on the support of the aristocracy in any overseas ventures. No error

By the way, its suppose to be "preoccupation of the history of the Johnson family....." as opposed to "preoccupation in the history of the Johnson family....." right?

thanks

contrasting with isn't correct because the way the sentence is worded, the kings are doing the contrasting themselves (we as the readers are actually doing it). it's better to use "contrasted with." also, i think its supposed to be "preoccupation with"
hope i helped

anyone else?

I endorse blue_mouse's explanation.

But just for certainty, you should ask an english teacher

yup.. blue_mouse is right..
another way of framing the sentence would be "In Contrast to"..

This is my opinion only, (I did pretty badly on my own W):
Contrasting with is in the present progressive tense, whereas could count is past tense. So to have parallel structure, wouldn't you use: "Contrasted with"?

yeah gman1988 as i said.. u and bluemouse have the right explanation... i just tried ti give an alternate one
