SAT Writing Question

To introduce itself to a wider audience, the little-known band sold its CD's cheaply to enthusiastic fans, who in turn shared the music with friends.

A) sold its CD's cheaply correct answer
B) sold their CD's cheaply
C) sell its CD's at a low price
D) prices their CD's low for to sell
E) will sell its CD's at a cheap price Answer I picked

Both her work on community service projects and her dedication to learning (A) has gained (B) Ms. Stevens the respect of (C) the entire (D) faculty. No error (E)

I picked No Error but the answer was B, "has gained".

Can anyone explain the answers to both of these questions? Thanks!

The first one is A because it’s the only on that matches in both tense and pronoun agreement. You choice, “will sell”, doesn’t make since with the “who in turn shared…” part which is past tense.

The second is B since it should be “have gained”. Notice that there are two subjects, “work” and “dedication”.

For the first one, E cannot be right because it is in the future tense, while the fans “in turn shared the music with friends”, which is the past tense. So we know the answer has to be in the past, which eliminates C, D, and E.

B is incorrect because “the little-know band” is singular as it represents one single entity, the band.

Therefore the correct answer is A.

For the second one, “has gained” is incorrect because it says “both her work and her dedication to learning”, the verb has to be plural and therefore the sentence should read:

“Both her work on community service projects and her dedication to learning have gained Ms. Stevens the respect of the entire faculty.”

Hope that helps.

pay attention to subjects that are wordy and combined with “and” like #2; this type of question is bound to appear at least once on the sat

I finally understand it. Thanks everyone!
