SAT Writing Questions - Help Needed

<p>These are some that I felt were iffy/got wrong. Tips on how to do them correctly? I omitted some answer choices since they are blatantly wrong - too lazy to type them. Help on any of these would be great.</p>

<p>~ 12. As economic conditions grew worse, citizens from every region of the country <begin to="" question=""> the rule of the dictator.</begin></p>

<p>C) have begun questioning
D) are beginning to question
E) were beginning to question</p>

<p>~ 20. The changes in the employees' benefit plan, especially the increase in insurance fees, <has angered="" the="" workers="" and="" threatened=""> a general strike.</has></p>

<p>B) have so angered the workers that they have threatened
E) have angered the workers to threaten</p>

<p>~ 11. Explaining modern art is impossible, partly because of it complexity but largely because <of it="" rapidly="" changing="">.</of></p>

<p>B) it makes rapid changes

<p>~ 25. The famous filmmaker <had a="" tendency=""> <of changing=""> his recollections, perhaps <out of="" boredom=""> <at having=""> to tell interviewers the same story over and over.</at></out></of></had></p>

<p>~ 24. The museum <is submitting=""> proposals <to several=""> foundations <in> the hope <to gain=""> funds to build a tropical butterfly conservatory.</to></in></to></is></p>

<p>E ("…grew worse," tense)
?
C (o_O…)
A (tendency to)
D (in the hope of?)</p>

<p>?</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>The sentence needs to be in past tense. “As economic conditions grew worse, … were beginning to question.”</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>Choice B is correct because it completes the so…that structure.</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>C is the only viable answer since others lack parallelism. I do agree that the sentence is not exactly the “good”, but it is certainly the “best” among the choices.</p>

<p>

</at></out></of></had></p>

<p>D. It should be boredom from.</p>

<p>

</to></in></to></is></p>

<p>D. Hope of gaining
If hope is used as a noun, “of” followed by a gerund is the appropriate phrase.</p>

<p>Nailed them all except for one - like UPenns said, the answer was B, probably because the idiom is “tendency to”? I’m guessing you missed the “at having” part because if you sub in “boredom from”, it wouldn’t make sense to say “boredom from at having.” . Thanks for the great explanations!</p>

<p>Oops. Now that I see it, tendency to seems correct.</p>

<p>Reading the thread I wasn’t clear on the proposed correction for 25. The corrected sentence is:</p>

<p>The famous filmmaker had a tendency to change his recollections, perhaps out of boredom at having to tell interviewers the same story over and over.</p>

<p>On silverturtle’s guide, it says that tendency (abstract noun) should take an infinitive form. So yep, the correction would be “tendency to”.</p>
