Posting this for a friend (obviously I'm already in college). 2 questions:

Which Ivy League schools and top LACs don't consider the writing section?

and

At one of the aforementioned schools that doesn't consider the writing section, would a kid who got 700+ scores on CR and math, but <600 on writing be a red flag in spite of "not considering" the writing section?

well, nobody really knows, and anyone who tells you otherwise who is not token adult or some other supermod is probably lying/guessing/reasoning and not really "knowing". You might get some helpful answers in the SAT/ACT forum, (find it one the side bar). But I do know that at my Uchicago visit, the adcom told me that they use the writing section, especially the essay, as a check on your admissions essay. Basically Horrible score + magnificent essay = questions about if you used a pro essay writer.

I had the same problem, I did terribly because I was hard to process the information from each of the answer clauses and see which one fits best in context. Then I took the ACT, and it has a really good grammar/writing section because each question is inside a large essay that you have to read, like, 10-15 qq per essay. I just like it better in general, so I advise you to try your luck there (My tests 540 sat writing, 33 ACT grammar).
