i've heard that when colleges say the subject tests are recommended, that that pretty much means they are required. this doesn't make much sense to me. i mean, if they are "required" then they are REQUIRED! Right??

I'm applying to my first choice ED and it's recommended...but I don't plan on taking them. Will this hurt me?

Hmmmm, when they say recommended what they mean is that you can definitely get accepted to the college without these scores, but that it would definitely be a good idea to take them to give you an edge over applicants who don't have them, but nonetheless you still have the possibility of getting accepted so it's really about how confident you are in your application.

When they say they are recommended, they are REQUIRED unless you lack money or other resources to access SAT2 testing. It's for people in difficult situations, basically. If you're not in that situation--and you probably aren't--then the tests are required for you.
In case you were wondering, I got this information from an admissions officer at a top 10 US News school.
