SAT'S tomorrow! please chance :)

Hello :) I'm a new member here and I feel depressed just looking at everyone's beautiful scores...

I'm a Korean junior at a public high school at the moment. I want to major in some sort of medical science next year. I probably sound like every Asian junior on this website. My parents have a high income, so it's very doubtful that I will get any scholarships other than academic ones.

Aiming for: Pomona College, Amherst, Wellesley, UCLA, USC, UCB, and possibly Ivies?
Looking for small liberal arts colleges, but I'm open to anything. Suggestions? :)

PSAT: 222 (NMSQT results not out yet)
SAT: 2080 (750 M 660 W 650 CR)
Taking them again tomorrow, but I doubt they're going to improve.
SATII's: 800 MathIIC, 780 Chem, 660 USH, 650 Bio (Retaking those last two in October)
ACT: 33, 34 (expected 35/36 the next time I take it)

Unweighted Cumulative GPA: 3.97
Weighted Cumulative GPA: 4.56
Ranking: 1/676
AP's:
- Sophomore: AP Chem (4), AP Art History (4)
- Junior: AP Psych, AP Bio, AP Calc AB, AP Language and Composition, AP US History (scores still pending)
- Expected Senior: AP Gov, AP Lit, AP Physics, AP Statistics

Activities:
Academic Decathlon (9-12)
- Freshman Delegate (9), Sophomore Delegate (10), VP (11), President (12)
National Honor Society (10-12)
- Historian (11), VP (12)

Yearbook (11-12)
- Staffer (11), Editor (12)
Sunday School Teacher (expected 7-12)

Summer 2011:
UCI Beckman Coulter/American Cancer Society Internship

Other questions:
Will my GPA make up for my terrible SAT scores?
Would it be better to turn in just my ACT scores because they are significantly higher than my SAT's?

What has me worried is your choice of major. every ec you have has nothing to do with medical science with the exception of your summer internship. It is really hard to show commitment and interest if the only time you can give to your intended field is over the summer. You need to be there every day if you can. I’ve been at my lab for 1500+ hours working on cancer research because I’m focused on that major. Your grades are good and your act scores are fine. But if you want to spend the next 4 years studying medical science at a top school, devoting 2 months over the summer to it just will not cut it. See if you can stay with the lab beyond the time allotted. You’ll be fine, but your ECs need to be focused and there is not s lot of time to do that.

Chance me!!

Damn bro your smart!

Thank you. :). Good luck on your test tomorrow!!

I would not worry about your SAT scores. Your ACT is high enough to make up for it. A 34/36 is comparable to a SAT score of around 2300 while a 35-36/36 is like a 2400.

I would not worry about the unfocused medical EC’s if you are going to a liberal arts college.

In fact you don’t even have to apply declared most of the time but I am not sure for premed because of the specialised nature of the course it might be a different system.

and lastly, take this post with a grain of salt. I do not claim to have absolute answers but I hope I have helped you find areas to research later.

@zhangvict, thanks for your input! I don’t think I did too bad on today’s SATs, but I still don’t think its going to be higher than my ACT score :frowning: What do liberal arts colleges really look for anyway?

A 35-36 is not like a 2400. It is easier to get a 36 than a 2400 because to get a 2400, you can only miss a couple in reading and writing and none in math, while to get a 36 you have a larger margin of error. A 35 would be 2300-2350 range, and a 36 would be 2350-2400 range.

Why do you not expect your SAT to improve from a 2080? You did well on the PSAT, so it’s reasonable to expect something around a 2220. Anyway, if you don’t do great on the SAT just turn in your ACT only. As for chances, I think UCLA is a match UCB/Pomona high matches, and Ivies high reaches… but you could still apply

34 is a good enough score. Dont bother retaking. Ignore your SAT scores.

Most schools only need two subjects. So Math II and Chemistry are good enough.

Spend your time on other things like writing essays etc. for supplements rather than taking the tests over and over. Some schools do require you to turn over all of the scores and so if your goal is go from 34 to 35, and this is your 3rd attempt, it does nt look good to adcoms.

USC has half a scholarship for national merit.
