I realize that RPI doesn't allow their 1st year students to live off campus - I think they just made the change so 2nd year students cannot either. After that my son found an apartment with a couple other friends and we saved about $3000. a year on room. That's a pretty good savings. Just an option for students to save money. They found their apartment on Craigslist and also RPI has an off campus housing site

Thank you, clpalmer. My S is a freshman and, yes, he does have to live on campus next year.

He already has talked about moving off campus after sophmore year. The rooms are really expensive at RPI (others have also mentioned $3,000 or more savings by moving off campus) and moving off campus will allow him to get off of the meal plan.

rpi can be pretty flexible if you petition the decision… i mean freshman really arent allowed to have cars but many do if you ask. I live in the quad and its extremely convenient, good luck!
