Say it ain't so!

Bumping for all new appointee families…….there must be some fresh stories out there! This is probably my all-time favorite, laugh-out-loud while simultaneously-hanging-my-head-in-shame-at-my-fellow-Americans-ignorance kind of thread!

Today, I went to my local police department to get my background check done. After explaining to the clerk what I needed, she got a confused look on her face and asked me where my recruitment station was. I explained that I wasn’t enlisting and that USMA is a college…to which she said she had to go get her supervisor.

Supervisor showed up, looked over the form, and asked me again where my recruitment station was, to which I again explained that USMA is a military college. She tells me (A) that she had never heard of it and (B) that the “United States Military Academy” was probably just a fancy name for some kind of basic training or military program. We went back and forth over this for a while. She eventually understood that it was indeed a college, but then thought that it was ROTC.

It was kinda sad, even the name “West Point” didn’t ring any bells…

omg…what city and state did this occur?

I just love this thread and reading all your stories. Keep them coming!

It was in Arizona, in one of the outlying areas of Phoenix

And now we know why she and her supervisor are blissfully, “clerks.” No offense to the many with knowledgeable minds in those important jobs. Sadly, these 2 ignorant gals are far from being lonely in our PC, post-military world. But the phenomenon’s far more pervasive and dangerous among our governing elites, those proclaiming to know so much more than they seem to portray. Now that’s a real problem.

On a somewhat related note:

[Video: Marines in Berkeley | The Daily Show | Comedy Central](<a href=“The Daily Show with Trevor Noah - TV Series | Comedy Central US”>The Daily Show with Trevor Noah - TV Series | Comedy Central US)

Oh, lay off Berkeley. This is a two-year old story that was much ado about nothing (though Rob Riggle was and is fantastic).

This especially ill-informed Code Pink group didn’t even recognize that the USMC office in question isn’t a recruitment center – it’s an administrative office for Berkeley’s ROTC, founded 1870. The school paper interviewed ROTC students, who said they get supportive reactions from other Berkeley kids. An embarrassed Berkeley City Council later retracted the USMC insults.

You can always find a few old hippies and simpleton pacifists around here, but badmouthing Berkeley is an easy cliche. As previous posts suggest, there’s plenty of ignorance to go around.

do you guys know any art school has good installation art programs?

Been a while since I popped in here but wanted to relate this (good!) story:

At the post office the day of the USAFA (win!) vs Navy game, in my full USAFA regalia. In walks a man in his USAFA stuff and we begin chatting, how odd it was to find to AF folks decked out as such in the Steeler Nation. Well, behind me in line, it turns out is the dad of a mid and behind him is a Marine, a 2002 Annapolis grad. Well, we’re all yucking it up while in line, ribbing and laughing (it’s the POST OFFICE, the line is LONG). Well, just as it is my turn to go to the counter, the guy in front of me turns around and he’s in his USMA sweatshirt!!! Told me he already had tickets to the November game and exclaimed “hooah” and left.

Well, the guy behind the Marine, cut in front of us all and left a $20 bill on the counter and said he was paying for ALL our postage while we were there. And said a huge “thank you” to all the parents and the A.D.'s. His son was a USCGA grad who had served in the Navy during the first gulf war. Who knew?? This wasn’t my local post office but more of a “regional” one.

Made me so proud to be the parent of great kids from this great land!

Walking the dog last night, in my USAFA MOM shirt, and met a fellow dog-walker.

“Oh, are you in the Air Force?”

me: No, my sons are at the Air Force Academy

Her: Is that the mechanic school I’ve seen on TV?

me: (squinting hard here) No, ma’am, it is a US Service Academy. It’s located in Colorado, in Colorado Springs. It is like West Point, Annapolis, etc., but for the Air Force.

Her: (and I’m not kidding) Oh, Colorado! Is that why they call it West Point, 'cause it is in Coloardo?

I let her live because her dog was sporting a Steelers sweater.

I was a cadet at USCGA in one of the early classes with women (at that time <100 female cadets) and was at a keg party at Connecticut College across the street. It was 3/c year, so I was in civies (jeans & sweater), talking to a guy (obvious Conn College student) who asked me what dorm I was in. I said “Chase Hall”. He was very confused - I said it was across the street. He was still confused & I finally told him I was at Coast Guard. He had never met a female cadet before, so he had to call all his friends over to meet me. I guess he thought all women at service academies were amazons or some sort of freak show!
