My son is thinking about Hartt but we are going to look at UConn one more time. Any comments???

I’d look at Hartt, if Robert Black is still teaching there. He is well regarded in the Bass community. Son enjoyed his 2 sample lessons with him and loved the Hartt school. ( We chose our instate school for music ed because it was much more affordable ie he could go without loans.)

The bass studio at Hartt is particularly strong and really tight! I know bassists at both schools, and if money isn’t the deciding factor, I’d suggest going with Hartt. Congrats on having such a great choice!

Thanks so much!

Is your son classical or jazz? My son is a jazz bassist at Hartt. He loves Nat Reeves. He is in his second year. He is gigging a fair amount in the Hartford/New Haven area, and recently had his first gig in NYC.

Agree with comments about Robert Black-fantastic teacher. He does seem to be more solo focused at this point in his career (but I imagine he is still great at teaching orchestral skills).

One more point in Hartt’s favor, if you are a music ed major, their reputation crosses state lines. This is important if you wish to teach outside of Connecticut because public schools often first screen resumes for graduates of schools they know and respect. Son went to a local hiring seminar last year and was told that this public school only pulls resumes from 4 instate schools and Hartt (out of state for us).
