<p>I'm a rising senior in high school and I'm very interested in going to SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) because of their Sequential Art major as well as the feel of the city and the school. I have looked at Illustration as well, which is offered at more colleges, but my true passion lies with Sequential Art. My dream is to become a graphic novelist. I live in Virginia, so GA is far away (the distance doesn't really matter to me, though), not mention that SCAD is $40,000 a year (including room and board). I've looked at MICA (Maryland Institute of Art), RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), CIA (Cleveland Institute of Art) and VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) and their art program. All of these offer Illustration, but not Sequential Art. I'm planning on visiting MICA and VCU this summer but probably won't be able to see RISD and CIA due to the distance.
I go to a college preparatory school and have decent grades and SAT scores. I believe I have a strong portfolio as well. If I was to go to SCAD (or any other art school, for that matter, as they're all fairly expensive) I need some kind of scholarship from the school. I like that SCAD offers an academic as well as portfolio scholarship, and I'm planning on applying early in hopes that I will have a better chance at getting a scholarship - they've said that they give them out earlier rather than later. It would also be nice to know where I'm going early (assuming I get in, but I'm confident that I would probably be accepted). I like that they have a Career Services program that will help you find work for after you graduate, as well.
If anyone has any experience/advice on any of these schools it would be greatly appreciated!</p>
<p>You might consider adding Minneapolis College of Art and Design to your list. D very strongly considered them when she had the same aspirations as you. MCAD has a major in Comic Illustration - one of the few out there. There is a parent named Redbug who has a D there and who I hope will comment in your thread.</p>
<p>Also, this list from National Portfolio Day might help:

<p>…going to the savannah college of art and design just because the school " offers an academic as well as portfolio scholarship"?? </p>
<p>First of all, read all the “fine prints” about SCAD’s scholarships. I heard from students and parents real “horror stories” about that.
Second: Education is the investment of your life! Get the best education or at least a decent one. This is the list of the best US Colleges: [Best</a> Fine Arts Programs | Top Fine Arts Schools | US News Graduate Schools](<a href=“http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-fine-arts-schools/fine-arts-rankings]Best”>http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-fine-arts-schools/fine-arts-rankings)
As you can see the savannah college of art and design (SCAD) is ranked #134 !!!</p>
<p>Also consider a safe place to study. Save some money to risk your life or living in fear? (Savannah has one of the most horrible chrime reputation in the US). </p>
<p>Just because a school looks flashy, cool and expensive doesn’t mean is a good one!</p>
<p>Good luck!</p>
<p>As someone said on the other thread…that list is for graduate programs. OP… I recommend visiting any school you are applying to IN PERSON. Meet professors, ask to sit in on a class, talk to students…
Apply to a range of schools. Many art schools offer merit scholarships but it is hard to figure out the rhyme or reason why you may get a lot at one and a little at another. Casting your net wide will allow you to asses multiple offers. Even though VCU doesn’t have the exact major you are interested in, it will be your financial safety since you are in state.
SVA may also be a good place for Sequential Art. They get amazing faculty coming through there.

<p>Horror stories? Like what?</p>
<p>My daughter receives a renewable academic scholarship at SCAD and we’ve had no issues whatsoever.</p>
<p>I’d also be curious as to your source for concluding that Savannah has “one of the most horrible crime reputation in the US”. Crime is everywhere, and in my personal view no better or worse in Savannah than most places.</p>
<p>Hi, yes my D goes to MCAD and loves it. You can read her first semester experience in the following link. She said she was going to put together a first year experience but I’m not sure she has does it yet. At any rate, she is an illustration major, with an interest in comic art as well. If you have any questions in particular, pm me and I’ll be happy to answer what I can. She got a merit scholarship.</p>

<p>As far as neighborhoods go, if you are in any good sized city, you just need to use common sense. Each school is requried to post a campus safety sort of report. You can probably check those if you are concerned. I’ve hear MICA’s area is sketchy too, but I would bet there are parents on this board with kids there, who might disagree.</p>
<p>Noyes - did you personally have a particularly bad experience with SCAD? Or are you just talking in generalities? I wonder, because you have posted the same “warning” 4 times, in 2 different forums. Is it your reality or perception?</p>
<p>here is the old thread for OP, about SCAD sequential art kid
<a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/600152-sequential-art-something-similar.html?highlight=sequential+art+or+something+similar[/url]”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/600152-sequential-art-something-similar.html?highlight=sequential+art+or+something+similar</a>
I replied this and that, but don’t know what happened to the kid.</p>
<p>I see and understand SCAD fans getting upset
but look, this blablah is just doing this for sake of doing, like mom4 said somewhere in other thread, why anyone would want dig up thread from 2006 just to dis SCAD?
must having personal grudge to the school or Savannah. </p>
<p>why always SCAD?
is maybe we should consider looking into, not this blablah’s personal issue or USnews which we all know by now how flawed and silly to put on the pedestal, esp. for artschool listing.
there will be always another one.
there was raininguru, relentlessly defended the school even after s/he got fired from.
then this LALondon somebody accused rainingruru being shill and forced the guru go underground despite now that taxguy is finally considering to visit SCAD for his DD’s grad school.
and
awwww taxguy!!! how could anyone disqualify him for anything he had to say!? honestly!!!</p>
<p>anyone can posts anything, it is the viewer who decide how much of it should be consider right kind of information depending on what they are looking for.
some kids/parents want to hear dirt. or would you all rather have posts like OCELITE doing for Chapman?</p>
<p>There really was some half forced suicide of the faculty story about SCAD.
money issue, like, great amount of operational head jobs are done my founder/owner’s family members
and it is still not accredited buy those artschool UN
I did hear scholarship was not matched following years due to sudden policy change.
then again
I know at least one artist who talked them into giving full scholarships as a transfer student.
The artist is forever thankful to SCAD, no other art school would ever have given the chance.
and at least one spoiled NYC slacker turned into -hard working sticking to the boring entry revel art job and thanking parents for the education - young adult after four years in Savannah.
so
let’s all chill out and see what blablah has to say, chances are s/he is a goner, or mod would be called in if there really is something fishy going on.
I believe in CC, as log as P3T and mamabear drae lives.
edit, add redbug to ^that. you beat me!</p>
<p>If private colleges make millions and those that make them rich are left penny-less, obviously there is some issues that need attention. How sad! Paying 35/40000 a year to learn about art and design!!! …and be jobless!! …we are lucky to live in a country with the finest state universities (excellent and cheap!) and some people are still talking about schools such as SCAD! <p>hey where you been?
it is sort of an old news that link is, got anything new?
gonna do some “occupy artschool”?</p>
