SCEA Applicants

hah YES, and i only sent mine today..i'm counting down the MINUTES until december 16th!

How many of you are doing on-campus interviews? Of you that are not and have turned in the application, have any of you been contacted about alumni interviews yet?

november 2nd...

wait.... how do you get an interview if you haven't turned in your app yet?!?!?!

i already turned in my app.. but i'm talking about an on-campus interview. you can schedule those before.

on-campus interviews would be cool...

I'm nervous about those. anyone want to tell me how yours went?

I had an on campus 2 weeks ago. It was absolutely great. You get to go to Yale, which is great, and then sit down with a Yale student and have an engaging conversation My interviewer asked about my interests and we just talked about those. I told her I was into polictics and that I'm a big democrat and it turns out she was the President of one of the Democratic societies on campus, so we talked a lot about that. I think the key is to find a common ground with your interviewer so that you really connect with him or her. And don't be nervous, it really is quite fun.

My on-campus interview was in August and it was great. My interviewer was an English/Music major, and I was to be a History/Music major, so we talked a lot about music and generally had a conversation more than an interview.

i had one in july and it was fun. i had a senior football player for my interviewer and we talked about music and soccer and harry potter. people tell you that interviews are serious and critical (critical they are, sort of) but they forget to tell you that they are also relaxing, fun and personal, not hi, im iplayoboe, i scored a 1600, 4 800s, 8 5s, i am the president of every club in school and captain of every varsity girls team we didnt even mention scores or school related stuff. it was personal.
enjoy!

that's reassuring. :) I know this has nothing to do with this gusy, but I thought one of yuo would be able to help me with calculus.. I need help understanding related rates! Anyone that knows how to do them, please email me. my email is in my profile. It would help if you had the calculus book that is HUGE and blue called "Calculus" by Rolan E. Larson and Robert P. Hostetler it is the 6th edition book. Thanks so much! I need to keep my grade up! :)

Oh... I did Calc AB and BC last year, so maybe I'll be able to help you.

Just so you know, I was an Ivy interviewer and the interviewers rank you on a scale of 1-9. I don't think they REALLY matter unless they are negative. NOT ONE SINGLE STUDENT I gave a low interview score to (like 1,2,3,or 4) EVER got in, and on some of them, I was called for more detail. (If I gave a top score, it was still a crapshoot).

We were given tons of material and instruction, and among many other things, we were told to look for people who had a specific, well-researched reason for going to the Ivy, but far more important, people who could GIVE BACK to the school. In other words, we know why YOU want US, but why should WE want YOU?

I gave the very lowest scores to people with dozens of ECs, because every time I interviewed one of those people it was crystal clear that they were just trying to rack up Brownie points and had very little interest or passion about the things they were doing.

Wow, I can't believe I've been missing out on this party for so long!

Since you all seem to know each other, I thought I'd say hi and a wish everyone a big good luck! I sent in my online application last week and have never been so relieved. I had an overnight and an interview a couple weeks ago, and it was absolutely stellar; the faculty and students were more than welcoming.

Just wondering - is anyone sending in a vocal recording? And if so, what are you singing? I have mine pretty much set to send, but I'd love to hear others' selections.

Chidimma! I have that same calc book! I would help you...but I dont understand anything. Oh well. Good luck. Where are you in it?

Voronwe-
I think everyone here would agree that your information was very helpful and appreciated. Thanks for de-mystifying the interview thing a little bit.

Chidimma - I HATE related rates. It just so happens that my brother is teaching the class, though, so I have a tutor at home...but sometimes his analytical explanations and proofs are wayyy over my head. I'm an english/music person.

Chidimma, I LOVE related rates! They are sooooo much fun. Let me check and see if I have that book lying around somewhere, and I'll get back to you.

The trick in related rates is finding the relationship between the two rates and linking them together into one equation where you can find one rate in terms of the other. The most common relationships are pythagorean thereom and any of the volume/surface area equations. If you need help, feel free to IM me (I got a 5 on the BC last year.... although I've probably forgotten a lot of the stuff ;))

thanks for the responses, guys! I'll get back to you no that sometime later. I wanted to know if any of you are sending a picture with your application?
