I've been recently informed about a schedule conflict.

I signed up for AP American Studies, which is a 2-period integrated english and history course (we take both the AP Language and AP US exams in May; i don't think this is unique to our school). I want to take this because it sounds like a unique course that combines my interest in english and history - also, the teachers are good and I have heard good things from people currently taking it.
However, enrolling in it would mean that I would have to take regular Spanish. I could take honors Spanish if I split AP American Studies into AP Language and AP US History. However, I would prefer taking the integrated course out of interest.

So what should I take, if I'm shooting for the top schools? Will having a non-honors/AP class impact me that much, if everything else is honors/AP? My school uses weighted GPA, so the first option wouldn't be the best GPA option (though the difference is small).

(Edit: I am not very interested in Spanish; however, I feel obliged to take the honor/AP route in Spanish simply for college admissions)

Are you already comfortably ranked in the top 2%, 5%, or 10%? If the former, then it would not make much of a difference. If you are struggling to rise to the top 10%, then perhaps the GPA increase is important.

How are your SAT/ACT, SAT IIs and AP scores? If you are in high (750) range, you have some flexibility. What colleges are you aiming for?

My school doesn’t report class rank, though I’d assume that I’m easily somewhere in the top 10%.

I’m a sophomore so no SAT/AP scores yet :/. I just took the SAT II Math and i’m pretty sure I got an 800, and I’m fairly certain that I will score around 2200/2300 on the SAT I, so I’m not worried about test scores.

Not entirely sure about colleges. So far I like Harvey Mudd, Georgetown, UPenn, Dartmouth, but that list is completely subject to change (and I know some of those are pretty high reaches).

I think that you have your answer right there. Take the integrated course, and the on-level Spanish. If that class proves to be too utterly dreadful and you just can’t stand it at all (I’m thinking along the lines of crying every night because you are miserable), you probably can work with your guidance counselor to change your schedule in the first couple of weeks of school, or at the semester.

take the integrated course. You said you’re more interested in it. Plus I doubt colleges are going to give you many bonus points for honors vs regular spanish (the UC schools may be an exception in how they calculate weighted gpa, but if this is relevant for you then you need to check to make sure UC counts the spanish class at your school as honors – see <a href=“A-G Policy Resource Guide”>A-G Policy Resource Guide)
