schedule

the schedule provided in the mail recently does not give the advanced math placement results, correct?

Correct...the registrar registered everyone who passed the diagnostic tests into Ma 1a.
Don't worry about it, you'll get the placement test results by email.

When did you get the schedule in the mail? Does the fact that I handed in my medical forms late have anything to do with why I didn't receive this yet?

I have not received a schedule.

yeeeah, me neither
I handed in half of my health forms in late and I had 59 credits on my course selection list...

I haven't received it either, but the mailing address is in Pittsburgh. It's probably just that the mail is slow in getting here.

I received mine today in the mail. Orlando, Florida.

I got my schedule already... and it seems that they've processed my diagnostic/placement test results, as I'm in sec 2 of Ma1a, sec 1 of Ch1a (I didn't know a single thing on the test), and sec 7 of Ph1a.

But what I was wondering about was CS1 on my schedule. I'm pretty sure I was able to pass the placement test for CS1, as I thoroughly tested my code and fully answered the questions... Is it supposed to be like that because CS2 is not offered first term? On the course registration form for electives, I chose CS1 first, then the EE course, then another elective course. So does the CS1 on my schedule mean that I didn't pass the placement exam? Or maybe they haven't graded it yet? Anyone know more about this?

Oh, and BTW, I'm from Plano, TX.

What exactly do the sections mean? Does it vary with each subject?

It could meain either (that it wasn't graded or that you didn't pass). You could try contacting the registrar or CS department to ask. If you passed out, you'll need to drop it from your schedule and add another elective when you get on campus. Don't worry, you have two weeks after classes start to do so, and you'll have plenty of reminders.

alleya:
Thanks a lot for the suggestions, I'll go check with the CS department right now...

Brett:
For Ma1a, Ch1a and Ph1a, the sections are generally assigned based of diagnostic/placement exam results. Usually, Section 1 of these courses is for those who have had no previous exposure to their respective subjects (or did horribly on their placement exams).
A section number > 1 means you're not in the "no previous exposure" section;
and usually the highest numbered section (say 15 out of 15 total sections) is usually for those who did exceptionally well, but each class (Ma1a, Ch1a, and Ph1a) has a different number of total sections so it's harder to tell if you are indeed placed in the highest numbered section.

Hope that clears things up for you...

If you passed out, you could probably even arrange to retake the test. Or you might want to check with your doctor about choosing another elective ;)

I just got a response from the CS department: No, they haven't graded the placement tests yet, the results are supposed to be sent this week. I'm guessing that I'll have to drop the CS1 course and choose another elective during orientation if I do place out of it...

You'll have the week before school starts to change around your classes on REGIS, the online course registration system, it'll be easy.

I completely changed my schedule using Regis when I got to Caltech, so don't worry about what your schedule says now. Also, advanced placement exams are graded, or at least you hear back from them, pretty late.

I'm curious - there aren't any PE courses listed on my schedule. Do the rest of you have them? Or does this mean that none of my three choices fit?

I do have one PE course listed on mine, and it was my second choice. But I'm pretty sure they don't want you to take more than 1 PE course per term...

I don't have a PE class either, even though I put down three choices.

This link should explain the physics sections:
<a href="http://www.pma.caltech.edu/GSR/freshmanphysics.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.pma.caltech.edu/GSR/freshmanphysics.html</a></p>

I'm the unusual one in this case. I did soccer first term, and fencing/tang soo do second term. "Finished" my PE at that point... annoying since the PE units after that were essentially "wasted," not that the time spent was. I suppose Joe would agree, except for PA units?

Good times, I highly recommend PE as a stress-relief from classes and such.
