What would be the best classes to take 1st semester of freshman year for a PAM major?

How much can we change during orientation? I've heard HumEc people should leave their schedules for now, but I know I placed out of micro (which is on my schedule) and I'm not interested in the Infancy and Childhood class they put me in (I'd rather a different HD course to fill that requirement)

Should i call the school now to sort this out? Or wait it out?

Did you use this sheet to figure out what you need to take?

http://www.human.cornell.edu/che/Academics/Undergraduate/Student_Services/Registrar/Degree_Progress/upload/PAM_09-10.pdf

2011, Human Ecology is the only college at Cornell that makes your schedule for you, for incoming freshmen.

I think a better way of putting this - is which pieces of the requirements are best to get out of the way 1st semester, to allow an easier time and/or more flexibility later on…?

and also - a quick question on the general dist. requirements: Let’s say you have a 5 on Physics B. Does this get you credit as an elective and placement OR does it place you out of the entire science requirement?

@Bear I am not sure what you are trying to point out with your post?

My D is in HumEc and yes they made her schedule last year. It consisted of Chem/Bio/NS all classes she needed for her major, so it was fine. She added her PE, FWS and math.

But the OP was asking what the best classes would be for first semester. So I am assuming he is planning to replace the Micro class with something else, which means he should look at the requirements and find something that fits in the same time slot and if he/she wants to change the HD course, he should figure out if it is a requirement and if not, find something else.

I don’t think being in HumEc precludes one from choosing their courses, but i don’t know that for sure. either way, it is easier/faster if he has some idea of what he wants to do before he calls, if he is going to call. at least IMHO

This may help you regarding AP Credit or maybe it won’t.

http://www.human.cornell.edu/che/DNS/academic/upload/undergradapcredit.pdf

Keep in mind, you can only use 15 AP credits for HumEc.

If the ap credit counts towards the class, you get credit for that class. The real question is if you need that class for something later down the road.

Example: you need x number of years of college chemistry for med school. So you wouldn’t want to use the credit, or if you did you would still need to take x number of years, just higher levels.

Hope that makes sense and helps

@usafa2011dad - thanks! That did help, and I think I’ll use my physics credit then because I have no need for other hard science courses!
