How did all of you make your schedule in college (especially for your freshman year)? I'll be making my schedule in 2 weeks.

My school made my schedule for me, as all freshman in my major had the same classes, unless they were ahead in physics/math, or had AP english credits. After the first semester, during the middle of the semester we schedule ourselves online. I've had my fall schedule since March I think!

It depends on several elements.
What's your major?
What are you interested in?
Does your school have certain core reqs. that are best to complete as a freshman?
Are you pre-prof?
Do you have AP credit?
Do you like early classes, or would you rather wake up later and get done later in the day?

As a premed, my freshman schedule was pretty set, and i really only chose one of my courses.

Those are all things you have to think about when you set up a schedule..

When I started school, I was in honors engineering so there were two pre-designed schedules to choose from with one slot open to choose a GER or Honors class to fill.

Now that I'm out of that, I just open up my university catalog and see which classes I haven't taken yet that are required for my major. Then I just have to meet with my adviser to sign off on the schedules I've made, get them to activate my account, and hope that I can get into those courses at the times I want when registration opens up.

If you're asking about this as a new freshman, though, my school had advising at orientation and everyone registered that way for the first quarter.

coming from someone who made mistakes with his first year schedule<<

Simple rules ( may not make sense now but you just wait)
*No 8am classes (8am classes are not what they were in high school)
* Late classes on fridays (thursdays in college are huge, you dont want to be getting up for a 8 or 9am class after going to bed at 3 or 4.

I know you might think these sound kinda stupid but you will realize how great it is once you get going

I always here Thursdays at college or huge but I've yet to see it at any college I've been to. O.o

I picked 2 classes that I absolutely had to have, and then worked my schedule around that. Granted, my school really doesn't have general ed (it does- but it can all be fit into every major pretty much) so I didn't have to worry about getting that out of the way. Keep in mind that some classes are only offered once every other year or every 3rd year so if you plan on studying abroad, plan your classes accordingly.

While b_22 has excellent advise, I also advise that you schedule classes close together. If you don't want to start until noon, fine. Have class at 12, 1, and 2:30, or something like that. Don't schedule classes at 11, 12, and 5pm; the 5pm one may get blown off more than you intended because it's when people are going to dinner, going to a movie, ect. Pretty soon you'll be thinking, "Crap, I skipped that evening class 5 times and now I have no idea what's on that test/can't figure out what to do with this paper/could end up flunking"! Especially avoid it on Friday! Think about how much it would suck to have a class at 5pm on Friday :(. I never did that, but when I was going places with friends and would see people sitting in class on late Friday afternoon and think about how much that must suck.

I echo the call to plan for classes that aren't offered regularly. It may keep you from graduating on time.

I think b_22 and frostburg covered everything I wanted to say. Listen to their advice, it's definitely useful.

thanks...i just need to remember it for when im in college

Definitely agree on the Thursday night thing (even though I'm not a partier) as well as the no 8am classes if you can help it.

I've managed to work out my schedule for next Fall quarter to have Fridays off, my earliest class T/R at 10am, and my earliest class M/W at 2pm. That will be a wonderful start for the new year :)

with17 credits, i had no classes MWF, and 4-6 hours of class Tuesday and Thursday :-) that was my best schedule ever (its actually 7-8, but i skipped alot of classes on Tu and Th too lol)
(this includes skipping my only class MWF everytime which was the most blowoff class ever, and i ended up getting an A lol) (and skipping some recitations) but i did well last sem, so it allworks out! :-)

but for me, im a fan of having like 8 hours of class one or 2 days, and very little or none the other days so i can use them to study/relax/sleep in etc

which is better, a class that starts at 9am MWF or one that goes from 4-5:30pm MTTh? I'm thinking it would be pretty cool to have my fridays off.

9am is ridiculously early, and 4-5:30PM is still pretty early in the evening.

I was used to getting up for classes beginning at 7:05am in high school. In college, my 8am class was TORTURE. 9am isn't a whole lot better. On the other hand, in high school you might be used to "doing stuff" at 4-5:30. In college? It's probably still before dinner time, and the night is young!

I make my schedules in this order:

1) Classes I NEED in a given semester (for whatever reason -- sequence of classes, only offered once every few years, great professor teaching it is retiring, etc.)

2) Classes I really, really want in a given semester

3) Professor teaching any other class

4) Time taught

Usually it just works out. If you have options, it's better to put together a schedule where you know you'll make it to class. If you know you have a hard time getting up in the morning, even 10am might be early. If you know you need to stay focused on school in order to do it, avoid gaps of an hour or more between classes. If you know you're interested in the party scene, don't go for evening classes on Thursdays/Fridays or morning classes.

If you're a freshman in an impacted or otherwise popular major, expect to have to suffer through early morning classes. It's part of the weeding process.

I too am a fan of having really busy days and then lighter days rather than spreading it around. I would usually rather have four classes in a row on Tuesday and Thursday and only one class on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The only time that I don't like this type of schedule is when tests come up. I'm more likely to have two or three tests on the same day when I have most of my classes on the same days.

My advisor pretty much said, "These are the classes you MUST take, and then you can take whatever core classes you want." So, I took the class I HAD to take for my major, then I took Math, Psychology, History, Success Strategies (1 day a week class recommended for Freshman to "ease the adjustment to college", easy A), and a PE class. 15 hours, easy A's and B's. I recommend taking easier gen ed classes freshman year unless you can't help it. I know my GPA took a beating sophomore year because of major classes and a really hard chem class I was required to take, so I was really glad my frosh GPA was so high, because it kept me just barely above a 3.0 overall.

i like doing tuesday thursday class is scheulde and class allows it

thanks for the advice
