If one were to be accepted to the 8-year Scholars for Medicine, could he or she still apply to other medical schools AND keep their seat in Stony Brook Medical School?

“Complete the Honors College or WISE program of study.
Complete all required pre-medical courses.
Maintain a minimum 3.2 science GPA & 3.4 cumulative GPA (3.2 cumulative GPA for students pursuing a BE in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences).
**Successfully complete the MCAT with a score at or above the national average for that test year (no less than 8 on any section) **.”

You don’t have a guaranteed admission. It means you should be able to apply out.

No - the contract is only if you keep your spot. If you apply out, you lose your guarantee.

Chris

Chris - So do you waive some of the requirements if they fall below the mark (I can see people not meeting MCAT) because the student has a contract?

You are not giving a guaranteed admission but students can’t look for safety?

No. They are guaranteeing admission, as long as you meet the requirements. If we’re admitting you into this program, then you should have no problem maintaining a 3.4 GPA and scoring the national average on the MCATs. (I believe that nobody’s ever missed that mark as long as we’ve run the program.)

Chris

That’s good to know. Sounds like science2014 needs to stick to the program or lose the seat if he applies outside.

Since the national average seems to be 25-26, the main constraint is ensuring a minimum of 8 in all sections.

I’m actually in the program (been great so far). The requirements in my admission letter state that I need a 38 on the new MCAT with no less than 9 on any of the sections. Go Seawolves!
