Scholars' Program - Info/feedback wanted

Good news: my daughter has been accepted to the Union Scholars' Program,

Great news: she really likes the school and the program sounds like a robust one with very much to offer,

Bad news: between a upcoming extended school trip and other commitments, she/we will likely not be able to attend any of the upcoming visit/sessions being offered.

I am most interested in hearing from students or parents with any real-life experiences related to the program. Thanks for your consideration and best of luck to all the students and parents during this exciting, yet stressful, time.

My daughter was accepted to Union and into the Scholar’s Program 5 years ago - she graduated last June.

There are no negatives to the Scholar’s Program, only positives. Unless the program has changed since it was explained to us at Accepted Students Day, you don’t have to maintain more than a 3.0 GPA to stay in the program, and even if you don’t do that, you won’t lose the scholarship. The attitude was “once a Scholar always a Scholar”.

As far as the benefits of the Scholar’s Program beyond the money, the biggest advantage is the opportunity to take extra classes, I think twice a year. Union is on trimesters and most students take 2 or 3 classes per term. My daughter took many extra classes, probably as many as she was entitled to. Because of the way that the trimester system works she never felt stressed about extra classes, she just felt lucky she could pursue her interests and didn’t have to be too choosy about which classes she enrolled in.

There is no special housing or anything like that - other students will only know your daughter is a Scholar if she tells them. There are a few fun things though like dinners, Broadway show trips, and an annual trip to Montreal. My daughter took advantage of these perks and really enjoyed them.

Congratulations to your daughter - mine LOVED Union -it was her first choice from the moment she visited campus. The invitation to the Scholar’s Program was just the icing on the cake, but it was very nice icing indeed!

Thank you, carmen617! Glad to hear your daughter had such a positive experience.

It sounded as though there would also be improved access to some honors-level classes and the like.

Anyone else with any thoughts?
