Scholarship at George Mason?

My daughter is freaking out because her friend was just awarded a scholarship at George Mason and she hasn't heard anything. My daughter has very high test scores/grades/awards in her area of interest and was accepted into the Honors College (she applied EA, is interested in International Relations).

Has anyone else received scholarship info? By snail mail or email? And do these things get released at different times? I told her it could have been delayed in the mail, but that didn't help! I am also wondering whether her friend heard earlier because she is planning to go into nursing. Her friend only applied because my daughter urged her to! No good deed....
I am also wondering whether she is going to be at a disadvantage for admissions and money because there is probably a glut of students interested in International Relations.
Thanks!

Heather, i have a HS senior who tells me that one “trick” some students use is to apply for a nursing program (evidently less competive, fewer applicants) and then they TRANSFER to their preferred area once they get in… these kids… my daughter applied to GMU reg decision and has heard nothing— while friends of hers have been notified. Let’s face it, the issue of diversity is on the front burner at many schools, not just racial but religious, socioeconomic, geographical etc etc. Not to mention always more female applicants than male… anyway, good luck to her!

Thank you! It turns out her friend received one of 25 full tuition (all 4 years) scholarships and my daughter, who has a lot better test scores, was offered $56,000 for 4 years. Her friend really does intend to go into nursing, but her friend doesn’t need the money and my daughter does. It is hard to understand and it’s making us wonder how the rest of her applications are going to be answered. It’s so stressful! Thank you for your kind reply!

My S (Comp Sci, EA) just got an honors scholarship offer yesterday, 2-14-12, for 18K over 4 years. It equates to 1/2 tuition. Do you know how many scholarships they give at Mason? Does your D want to do the honors college? What scholarship did she get? My son is not even sure he wants to do the honors curriculum. He is still waiting to hear from other schools also.

I am looking for help/ suggestions my son was accepted to George Mason, but we recently found out he was not accepted to honors college nor is he be offered any scholarships. He is a National Hispanic Scholar and a National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, Eagle Scout, 3.8 GPA unweighted and the list goes on and on, is it really that competitive or political. Please help!!

The is a list of scholarships at GMU on their website that you can apply for. Many are for Hispanic students. You should check this out and apply for as many as fit. As for the Honors college and who gets offered scholarships, I think there is some subjective aspects and that each year they look for different things. I think there are always some people that are very qualified that for some reason get overlooked. It isn’t fair but it does happen. I have another S at VT and he was not excepted into the honors there and I was really surprised. He has since distinguished himself in other ways and refuses to apply to university honors now. I’m sure your son will do the same at GMU once there.
