Daughter has been offered full athletic scholarship - wants to major in kinesiology. Does anyone have experience with this major? Her SATs would be a little below the average for the school (OOS student), but is a good time manager and hard worker. I hear the school doesn't support its varsity teams much. Is this true? Do the athletes tend to stick together? Anyone with a similar situation?

Congratulations to your daughter, that’s awesome!
I’ve taken one of the “active” kinis courses, and my professor for that was awesome! He had some funny stories about taking former Governor Mark Warner rock climbing. Two of my friends hope to double major in Kinis and Buisness. One hopes to open a sports fitness clinic, while the other wants to run a judo school. From what I’ve heard Kinis is not one of the hardest majors.

As for sports, I went to every football game, but have yet to attend another varsity sport event in my semester and a half here. I have had some friends who I didn’t even know were on varsity sports teams until well into our first semester here. As for other types of support, a brand new sports building was recently completed. From a friend on baseball I have heard no complaints about institutional support, while another friend on color guard complains all the time (I guess color guard isn’t really accepted as a sport?).

The football team gets okay support… men’s bball gets a little (which dwindled as they had a bad season). The other supports do not draw much in the way of student support, but they are very successful teams, often bringing home conference championships. Do you mean support other than student support? Make sure your daughter compares her schedule to the syllabi for her classes and talks to the professor ASAP about potential conflicts. The professors won’t let you cut corners in the classroom (but you are probably not asking about that kind of “support”), after all, W&M produces athletes who are students, unlike some schools.

Remember, half the students at W&M have SATs below the average! That is not something to worry about. Many W&M athletes are very successful inside and outside of the classroom. They work together a lot, and a lot of them live with teammates off campus. Good time management is definitely necessary for the varsity athletes at W&M, but if your daughter has it then she should be in good shape.

HeretoHelp mentioned new facilities… there is a brand new football specific building, funded entirely through private donations. There is a fairly new baseball stadium. The soccer field is only a few years old. [I think] athletes donate to W&M at a higher percentage than the general alumni population.

if I can try to help with anything else or clarify something, please let me know!

Daughter is a kines major. She loves her professors and the classes. It depends what she wants to do with the major and the type of classes she’ll take. Anatomy and Physiology are extremely demanding. Time management is what it takes to handle any class. Sounds like your daughter can excel. Also, clubs sports rock.

Thanks so much to all those who replied. We will go through all the info. We look forward to our visit there soon.
